Running the engine w/o muffler?

Is it a bad thing to run th engine without a muffler?
I don't have one right now and I need to move the car in and out of the garage. I don't want to burn valves, if thats the case.
Right now it's just exchangers and the euro pre muffler.

Thanks.

no problem -- unless the neighbors shoot you

I have to deal with there haphazard fireworks on a hot dry july evening every year, So a little porsche rumble shouldn't bother them to much.

Maybe I'll ride buy the house a few times an hour......

You could drive it all day without a muffler and it wouldn't hurt anything more than your ears.

you probably wouldn't want to drive it far either...you'd end up going deaf. Try revving it a bit once you start it and watch as the neighbors' jaws drop

Ron, I used to run megaphones at the track, and though they make a beautiful noise, they also don't hurt the engine at all.

In fact, the engine will run cooler (no restrictions to get the hot exhaust out), and it will run better (no back-pressure, thus exhausting all the spent products of combustion).

So run her all you want without the muffler, only your neighbors will care. The car won't!!!!!

Finished up getting my engine back into the car after a rebuild about midnight.

So picture if you will. It is midnight, the heat exchangers have been installed but nothing else. Couldn't wait to fire it up. Turned her over. My wife came out and said congrats. My neighbor came over the next morning and asked me when I bought I harley. I did fire it up with the garage door closed almost 100% (used a fan to help with ventilation)

This reminds me of when I put my headers on, I left the house at 6:00 am to take it to the muffler shop so I could see cops more clearly (less traffic for them to blend in with). Man, was it loud!! It was the longest 12 miles I've ever driven I think. I thought the whole neighborhood heard me leave.

I really love to do that, even though that the neighbors get pissed off. The last time I did it was to celebrate the New Year, that night you can do basically all the noise that you want. I took my car and drove it around the neighborhood. I really felt like if I was driving in NASCAR....

You should try it!!!!

I think that someone should create a system to disconnect the muffler from the inside of you car. That will make you able to drive your car in the highway making a lot of sound, and is a trooper stop you, you can put it back the way it was.

For that you use a old throttle body, make a custom flange to bolt it and weld it to the exhaust tubing making a "Y". One side to the muffler and the other to the throttle. Use a bicycle gear change cable to open or close the throttle to the wide open position. When you want to race, or going into the highway or see a cop, close the throttle and is done. The silence comes back!!
