904 Replica on Ebay

OK. Maybe I'm weird, but I might like to have one of these.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4517278384&fromMakeTrack=true

I posted here because I couldn't find the 904 board and because it says it takes any Porsche motor and transmission (I'd have to choose 911). I don't see how 911 suspension components would bolt on.

Is this the Beck 904? Does anyone have details on suspension and weight or manufacturer for this puppy?

Yeah a 904 is definately cool. Beck just started producing 904s but I dont think that this is it. It is not the first time that this body was on ebay. Im sure that you have heard of Martin and Walker from england (http://www.904gts.co.uk/). They have been producing 904s for quite some time. I would imagine that the 904 would nicely fit with 911 parts as the 904 was basically the car that was used to test the 911 before it went into production. Not a practical car; very low, harsh, TIGHT, hot, loud, but for a true petrolhead a very nice fun car especially if you build it yourself.

I think Dave B from TRE said on one of these 904 threads that the Beck replica looked perfect for a 3.6, a/c, etc. in order to make a very streetable driver. I, for one, would absolutely love to have a simple silver 904 replica as a semi-daily driver. I can't wait for the Beck repros to start turning up here and there for inspection.

Now that is really cool, but can you imagine the cash it would take to do it right?

I saw one at Pomona (check the archive photos on this site) about 2-3 years ago with the 3.6 installed. Looked real clean...

There was one (a 904 replica) in the LA Times three weeks ago or so. I thought of calling to ask about it. Did anyone see that ad?

Wayne, where are the photo archives?

I remember seeing the prototype when Chuck Beck was testing it at Willow. 3.6 motor, 915 tranny and a lot of tire. All in a very light chassis.

Sweet.

There is a Walker and Martin one up here I have seen at DE's. It is cool. They even run in the Carrera Panamerica every year. It has a twin plug motor, but I am not sure what size it is.

I would like one.

A 904 replica with a 3.6......I must have one

I know it's a replica, but Im saving my money starting now. Anybody know what the Beck car cost? I remember reading about them on his site last year. Are they being imported as kits yet?

Last I heard the Beck 904 is not available as a kit. Finished minus engine/trans is $45K i believe. Alittle high for a kit in my taste. Im waiting for the price to go down.

How would one register a new 904/speedster/550 replica in California? Is it subject to these smog laws?

If you use an old crankcase then I think that you can register the car for the crankcase's year. So in California I believe you would want to use a sub-1975 case. Then you can smoke it up real good to my knowledge.

I am thinking this must be a Beck body, as Villa Rica (GA) was where the Beck 904s were going to be produced.

My father made the dash for Beck's 904 and I did the preliminary wiring to get the car sorted. I had the offer to make the uprights for the multi link rear.

The chassis needed some reinforcement at the time and interior. Its wider than the original to allow more occupant space. Car looked good.

The first 500 registrations of "kit cars" or "Specially constructed vehicles" each year in CA are allowed a special exemption for smog purposes. One is allowed to specify the year model either as that of the engine OR the model year that the body most resembles. Since the 904 was first built in 1964, it can be specified as a pre-'75 model and thus smog exempt.

If you are not one of the first 500 statewide to register the car in the calendar year, then your engine is the determining factor, and it must meet all smog regs for the year of manufacture.

We follow Beck very closely on www.spyderclub.com. Beck left Avanti when avanti didn't move on his designs, and had offered up the molds and tooling for the 904 I believe. This may be the first foray of the person(s) that purchased the spoils. Looks nice, if it is the Beck car, which I saw when I picked up my spyder, it's well thought out and pretty authentic.
