According to a few folks in my Corvette club who have C5's ('97-'04), 30 mpg is very doable on the highway. (Not with my right foot, though.)

I feel sorry for GM. Young kids used to want Corvettes.

What went wrong????

Kind of like the Harley crowd... It is a baby-boomer car.

They have the money, but in 10 years they will all be buying motorhomes and Kias to tow behind them.

Where will GM be then??

Bah! Incorrect.

Ditto to all of this. Cars are too freaking heavy these days with the current regulatory and general engineering situation. Lotus hasn't forgotten how to make em light, but their reliability is likely to suck. About the only thing on the market that excites me...

NEW Z06!!!

Jack, the new Z06 have been running around the Detroit Area (pre-production cars) in the last few weeks. Up close these cars are SERIOUS machines!! Talking to a few engineers whom have driven, echo the word ,Serious! Silver color looks best with graphite wheels. John

...and the demo for used 911s?

Carl83911 06-15-2005 11:35 AM

So why not get the best of both worlds.
a sexy 911 body with the brute force of a v8.

Hey - stick a new Z06 small block in a 997 and at least you have a true dry sump engine with some kick...

Carl83911 06-15-2005 12:17 PM

I know, I'd thought of that after i posted. Now, I'm waiting for the flak.

Tyson Schmidt 06-15-2005 12:23 PM

Hmmmmm, used or theft recovered 996 with missing or blown motor......... Swap in a SBC V-8. It already has the plumbing and radiators for a water cooled engine. Might be fun!

bandhawk 06-15-2005 12:25 PM

A 7 liter engine in a time when our fuel supply is arguably nearing a crisis. What a great idea. Thank you, GM, for serving as a role model for social responsibility!

MotorTrend did a track comparison at Roebling Road in Georgia. The entrants were the new Vette and the Carrera S. The Z06 will certainly have more power than it's generic Chevy couterpart. Hopefully, they will also include the performance suspension package.

However, the MotorTrend test demonstrated the Carrera S finesse vs. the Corvette brute force approach. For my money, they are both too heavy, too gadget filled, and too far from the original concept of the 911. Of course, I don't think the Vette will ever be near the original 911 concept of light and simple. Those days are long gone.

Give me a GT3 and I start to get excited.

Tspringer 06-15-2005 12:31 PM

Hmmmmmmm

Give it a few years and you will be able to pick up a ZO6 for around $50K. Add in another $20K of racecar mods......

INSTANT competitive racecar! It will be interesting to see how these things do in SCCA and IMSA. Where would they fit in ALMS competition?

I could see a ZO6 only race class doing very well.

I agree with the observations about Porsche being long detached from its roots. Today, they build SUV's for rich soccer moms and 997s for the gold chain wearing thrice divorced 55 year old dentists. Top level racing? Whats that?

The ZO6 is nothing but good news for track junkies.

I do however agree with the black box comment. Having my car be capable of reporting me to the looting cops is not something I will tolerate. There is going to be a nice aftermarket for none-connected black boxes to sub in when the warranty is done!

zymurgist 06-15-2005 12:34 PM

I have to wonder what fuel economy will the Z06 get compared to a Porsche of similar performance numbers? I would be willing to bet that they will be within 5 MPG of each other. I don't think it's fair to single out GM for selling cars with high performance engines, while other manufacturers are selling their own hi-po cars, and after all, it takes fuel to get that torque that pushes you back in your seat.

JeremyD 06-15-2005 12:36 PM

I didn't buy my 911 for it's fuel economy rating

strother 06-15-2005 01:27 PM

All of this is rather odd to me. I'm 32 years old, and I've never thought of Vettes and 911s as being in the same class. Vettes -- no matter how fast they are, how well they handle, or how well they are put together -- are simply missing something. They have a really *****ty aura. What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't matter if a Vette can beat a 911 in a drag race or in a grand prix style race, they are not admirable machines.

Craig 930 RS 06-15-2005 01:33 PM

My 930 is a fuel sucking pig. 5 mpg on track.
But who the hell cares

911teo 06-15-2005 01:56 PM

Yeah I don't get this fuel issue efficency either when you are talking about 500+ HP sports cars.

30mpg.... The way I drive my cars even a Golf diesel (my first car)never managed more than 8km/l which roughly translate to 19.5mpg...
