For less than a Carrera, you get more than a Turbo

Am I talking about the Cayman S?

No.

Chevrolet juat announced some specifications and pricing for the 2006 Corvette Z06.

For $65,800 (Cayman money), you get:

• 505 horsepower @ 6300 rpm

• 470 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpm

• 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds (while still in first gear)

• Weight of 3,132 pounds

• LS7 7.0-liter Gen IV V-8 engine with lightweight reciprocating components

• 6-speed manual transmission

• 7000 rpm redline

• Aluminum body structure with one-piece hydroformed perimeter rails frame and magnesium engine cradle

• Carbon-fiber composite front fenders, front wheelhouses and floors

• Dry-sump engine lubrication system

• Hand-built engine at GM’s new Performance Build Center

• Engine, transmission and differential oil, and power steering coolers

We'll see how it does at the track, but...

...Porsche, are you listening?

sounds pretty amazing. I wouldn't kick one out of bed for eating crackers.

That's a freakin' big engine that probably doesn't weigh much more if any than a small block out of a mid '70's station wagon.

Yeah, but at my youthful age of 37 there is no frickin' way I'd be caught driving a Vette around. No way. Just couldn't handle the ridicule from my peers...

I think the Z06 and the Hummers are the only items GM won't discount. Oh well, there's always the Cobalt.

And I'm sure that the Performance Build Center isn't among the 3 plants that are getting closed.

LS7 is an aluminum block & heads - I bet it weighs a LOT less than the cast-iron small-blocks in the Chevy wagons or Monte Carlo SS my mom used to drive.....

The interesting thing is that the Corvette race cars, at least so far, are so different from the road cars that they could just as well be two different models. The GT3, on the hand, is pretty much the same - street and track.

Big flash in the pan as always. After 3 or so years and several thousands of miles, I wonder how reliable the car is going to be.

$65K as a starting point... You want: A/C, Leather, CD player, Power seats, Premium wheels, Side Air bags, etc., etc. And the car is now well over $80K..only to be worth $40K in 2 years and $30K two years after that.

Buy into the GM "genre" if you like, but eventually you'll get burned.

That's why you wait 3-5 years, then pick one up. Those things aren't going to be worth anything close to $65K in 36 months after purchase.

I was talking about this a year ago:

The New Corvette: 400hp, 4.3 to 60, 186 mph, $45,000. Why don't I want one?

Now, I'm thinking I "might" want one.

All of which - and more - will be options on your new 997, popping the sticker into 6 digits pretty easily....
