For less than a Carrera, you get more than a Turbo
Am I talking about the Cayman S?
No. :( Chevrolet juat announced some specifications and pricing for the 2006 Corvette Z06. For $65,800 (Cayman money), you get: • 505 horsepower @ 6300 rpm • 470 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpm • 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds (while still in first gear) • Weight of 3,132 pounds • LS7 7.0-liter Gen IV V-8 engine with lightweight reciprocating components • 6-speed manual transmission • 7000 rpm redline • Aluminum body structure with one-piece hydroformed perimeter rails frame and magnesium engine cradle • Carbon-fiber composite front fenders, front wheelhouses and floors • Dry-sump engine lubrication system • Hand-built engine at GM’s new Performance Build Center • Engine, transmission and differential oil, and power steering coolers We'll see how it does at the track, but... ...Porsche, are you listening? |
sounds pretty amazing. I wouldn't kick one out of bed for eating crackers. :D
That's a freakin' big engine that probably doesn't weigh much more if any than a small block out of a mid '70's station wagon. |
I'm a chevy guy and have always liked the vette. It's American muscle.
|
Yeah, but at my youthful age of 37 there is no frickin' way I'd be caught driving a Vette around. No way. Just couldn't handle the ridicule from my peers...
|
Can I get a GM employee discount on that!
|
Sounds like a good kick in the pants to the Dodge Viper.
|
That new '06 Z06 is a very nice fast car

Can I get a Cobalt with the LS-7 ?

LS7 is an aluminum block & heads - I bet it weighs a LOT less than the cast-iron small-blocks in the Chevy wagons or Monte Carlo SS my mom used to drive.....
|
The interesting thing is that the Corvette race cars, at least so far, are so different from the road cars that they could just as well be two different models. The GT3, on the hand, is pretty much the same - street and track.
|
Big flash in the pan as always. After 3 or so years and several thousands of miles, I wonder how reliable the car is going to be.
$65K as a starting point... You want: A/C, Leather, CD player, Power seats, Premium wheels, Side Air bags, etc., etc. And the car is now well over $80K..only to be worth $40K in 2 years and $30K two years after that. Buy into the GM "genre" if you like, but eventually you'll get burned. |
that car is a porsche and F 430 killer...
I like the above mentioned cars more...but you can't ignore the bang for the buck... I am curious to see the new M3 too... porsche will have the answer in 2 years when the stuff a V-8 in the 911...sad sad day... |
The sad thing is.......
One more than likely will never get one for even close to sticker. Adios valueamos. |

What's the depreciation of Z06s from two years ago? How much did they sell for then, and how much now on the used market? Anyone know?
|
I like:
492HP 442TQ Weight of 2580 lbs $45,000 +/- Now there's a car I would buy ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118799341.jpg |
Sounds pretty impressive, but 7 liters? So much for 'less is more'.
kqw is on the money as far as I can see. Ah hell, I just can't get excited about new cars any more... ianc |

After a few years of depreciation, after I finish my new house, and after my daughter gets out of college, I could see buying one as a street/track toy. Don't know if my friends would disown me, though.
Of course it'll squeak, rattle and have service issues like any other used 'vette, but 505 horsies??? 427 cubic inches??? Who needs a 6-speed? With a Powerglide, it would still fly. |

Forget the issues that were inherent in the Z06..we've solved those issues. NOW this one is the best....and it's only $85K.... |
Here's some pricing info as found on the same forum Jack originally posted from:

That's a very expensive CD-changer...
The base price of the car is very respectable, but they ream you on the CD-changer! |
Curb Weight 3,043 lbs. for the CGT

I would like to Porsche go the other way with the Cayman. Light and fast is how Porsche managed to compete in the past against cars like the Cobra with the 550 Spyder.
The 911 has become as bloated as the older Vettes used to be. As someone previously mentioned the only way up for the 911 is a v-8 power plant, (YUK!) or to go on one hell of a diet. If I were managing Porsche I would continue to produce the 911 for the traditional buyer, introduce the Cayman as they have done for the entry level buyer, and lastly put some insane power into the Cayman and price it along side the 911. What will save Porsche in the end will be a return to their roots. That is, if they are not paralyzed by their fear of ruining the 911 cash cow to do it. |

I did see where Porsche was considering a club sport version of the cayman. Hopefully we can catch the new zo7 in the corners and with late braking
|
But I still have all my hair....
Yes indeed 500+ HP M5(6), Vettes, horse power=good, cost of gas=bad |
Domestic is looking better and getter. My friend has a 04 Cobra Stang and its getting to be a impressive car.
He's actually working on the suspension, putting in some full race suspension into it. 10 years ago he'd just talk about his quarter mile times. Now he bought the suspension before upgrading the engine at all, and hoping I get a 911 before Miller opens the new race track here in Salt Lake City, so he can whup me. I'm pretty sure he can whup me, he is a better driver, but before I felt I had a technical edge. Now, I don't think I have one at all. |

Where there is confusion, possibly, lay in the changed Porsche customer. They are not us. The ones plunking down $85,000 for a 997, isn't concerned with suspension mods, corner balancing and future engine transplants. The Porsche SUV owner even less so. Oddly, it seems to be the reverse for Corvette owners. Where not too long ago the Corvette owners were just everyday drivers looking for cool cars, Corvettes are now written (by the magazines, ad campaigns, etc.) and talked of as track-day cars...in much the way Porsches used to be talked about. Meanwhile, Porsche is being advertised as an SUV manufacturer...but a successful SUV manufacturer nonetheless. No, I don't think Porsche needs to be saved. It's us, the enthusiasts who need, if not saving, enlightening. Possibly if we want new-old cars in the next ten to twenty years, a different car manufacturer altogether. |
I'm looking into maybe the new M3 "Track" model. Anyone seen it? Or even the new 05 Cobra Stang.
Yes I said it. |

What to replace it with? I don't know. I've spoken to some racers and seen in person the Lotus Elise. The new Mustang GT looks nice, particularly the Shelby, the S2000, the EVOs and WRXs, even the 2006 GTI and the new RX-8 looks interesting, both of which are much more versatile than a 911. The Corvette, IMHO, is just sort of Mitsubishi looking in the front and uninspired in back. Even modifying my 911 any further has come to me as a ridiculous exercise in futility of not just reinventing the wheel, but trying to stay up with hardware thirty years younger than it. It's a no-win situation. Granted, it'd take a lot to pry my current 911 from my hands. But it'd take an equal amount of excitement to put me in another Porsche, and I just don't see that happening right now. |
The Z06- LS7 is a 427ci/ 7liter "SMALL BLOCK"!!!!!-Yikes!
|
One thing the pricing doesn't tell you. GM doesn't charge a dime for the tattle-tale "Black Box" that is standard equipment in ALL GM vehicles. For that reason alone, I'll never buy one. It's like having a cop, ticket book in hand, riding in your car...
