Speed/Ref Sensor wires

I replaced my CHT sensor wire yesterday and the rubber coating was just flaking off of the other two wires that run thru the grommet. It was down to the plastic wrapping that was around them. Well, the more I worked in there, the more of that I lost. It is down to bare wire on these, until they enter the engine bay at the rubber grommet. I was wanting to drive it this morning, but wanted to make sure it would be ok first.

My question is will this hurt anything? They look to be steel twisted lines, but I am assuming there is some other wires inside of that.

Anyone else ever have this problem, the coating was just flaking off anytime I would try to remove the grommets.
