DIY cat mod experiment

My cat was all ready gutted before I got my '79 SC. I pulled it off to make a jig to make a DIY pre-muff. Just for yuks, I decided to cut it open and add a perforated tube suurounded by glass packing. I thought just maybe, I then with my newly fabbed "mini muffler" could fab a tail pipe and mount and run w/out my muffler.
Well my new "homemade pre-muff" was waaaayyyyy toooooo loud even with a cherry bomb held up to it. I ended up just using this modded cat for now and it cleaned up the idle sound a little bit compared to the gutted hollow cat.

Men do not quit playing because they get old.... They get old because they quit playing.

I dont know about the rest of you DIY'ers, but it sickens me to see so much room, and a lift. It really makes me green...With envy!

I am cheating by working in my hangar, as my wife now has strict control of our garage! About 15 yrs ago though, I built an airplane in a two car garage that had a car parked in it most of the time. Where there is a will there is a way!

Even if it DID work, that fiberglass would have become friable and blown out the end very quickly.

BTW, the newer sport cats have very little restriction and help in sound muffling.

I wrapped the perforated tube with 3 wraps of heavy woven type fiberglass before "stuffing" in the insulation type glass. Stainless steel "steel wool" would probably be best. Oh well, it was just an experiment and if/when the glass disintegrates, it the pipe will still serve it's purpose until I get the urge to build a new pre-muff sometime. (I had removed it to make a jig while doing some muffler work and next thing I knew I was cutting it apart)
