aussie->just got my 67 911, need advice

Hi everyone,

Glad to say i just got my project car, 1967 911 coupe, it needs a whooole lotta work but thats what i wanted! as far as rust goes, the last owner fixed the majority of it up but hasnt been brought back to bare metal yet so im sure there is some more lurking in there somewhere! What im looking for is advice from anyone in melbourne australia that can point me in the direction of a top quality place to get my car repainted. of course i dont want to spend the earth because there is a lot of other work to do but i think that getting the car totally stripped back and as rust free as possible is crucial so i dont mind spending a bit of money getting this done.
So what i am really looking for is a place to strip back and paint that has experience in respraying old 911's and is renowned for doing good work!
Hey and while we are at it.... seeing as its a project car any tips for good places for parts .... etc locally would be great!

thanks guys

Can't help you because I'm in sydney but if you call spider or autocoupe down there they may be able to put you onto a good body shop (I've had good experiences with both crowds). If you havn't posted this on the australian forum that would also be the way to go.

Hey Drew!

Congratulations on the new ride!

Check out Paint & Custom Workshops in Darebin Rd, Thornbury. They do a lot of Porsche Club of Vic cars and race cars. They used to be (might still be) Lamborghini Australia's chosen paint & panel shop for warranty work. They painted my boss' 993 and it was stunning...

Where in Melbourne are you?

Cheers!

Follow up on Gavinlit's advice - call Spyder @ 9532-0246 or Autocoupe. Call Battisti or whoever you spell it if you want a top-end and top-priced paint job ie 30k+ (also 2nd hand info)

It's something I'm thinking of, so let me know your results. My car has had some stuff done by LA Smash Repairs in Richmond, who also do (or did) stuff for Duttons, the job was good for the $$. Not fantastic but OK.

well i live in richmond so i might pop over and talk to them and see what they can do or something, if they do work for duttons it cant be too bad so ill look into it.
I spoke to a pray painter today and told him that i was interested in doing the dissasembly and re-assembly of the car myself and get someone to do the stripping and respray and he told me that i was crazy and that i was asking for BIG trouble if i did the assembly myself..... now im no panel beater but im fairly handy.......is there any validity in his statement or is he just trying to drum up more work for himself.... his reasons were that once resprayed i would never get the panels and chrome back on and that you need a panel beater to do this? anyone done it and give me an idea of how hard it really is?
He also brought up a valid point that i was already aware of but had been umming over what to do..... the bare metal repsray... he reminded me that it would discover a whole lot more rust. Now the car has had fairly exstensive rustwork already but is not back to bare metal so i was thinking there would be more under there but figured that it just had to be fixed if i was going to do it right....... can i ignore this potential problem and just get the car prepped and sprayed over or should i go the whole hog..... i know this is heavily dependent on my budget but im in no hurry to get the car finished so i dont mind taking my time and getting it right the first time!

so any advice you could give would be appreciated!

I'm no panel/paint expert but I figure if you're going to the trouble if dissasembly, prep & paint that you might as well go the whole hog & take it back to bare metal.

Have you spoken to Mike Tankard about your body work he is in Vermont and knows 911's extremely well ( '92 Porsche cup champion). His number is 03 98018279.
Also do you know of the TYP901 register of Australia, www.typ901.org if not have a look as it provides an excellent knowledge base and a great group of people!
Regards Mike
