Starting sequence...what works for you on old cars?

I have a love-hate relationship with carbs. My old landcruiser starts up every time when cold but is a bear when warm. I've been playing with the choke, accelerator pumping, WOT, etc and it is always a bear.

Now to the 911...this is a new-to-me 2.7 with webers. I can get it to start after playing with the hand-throttle, pumping, and various settings but only after 10 or 15 tries.

Does anyone have a sequence that works every time when cold, a different one that works every time when warm?

I know, not too technical but essential none-the-less. Its embarassing to have such a great looking car that attracts attention but to be struggling every time to start it.

I to have a 71' 2.7 with weber 40 IDA's, first do you know if they have been set up for your motor, proper jetting, venturies etc?

For me at sea level in moderate climate, when cold pump accelerator a couple of times, hold at about 1/3 throttle, and starts right up. I'll feather the gas for about minute before and if I decide to use hand throttle, sometimes I'll just warm it with my own foot, more personnal.

When warm I hold accelerator 1/3 to 1/2 open, a couple of cranks and we're running, and back off gas pedal upon start.

Your mileage may vary!

Here are a couple of important links for prior Pelican threads.

“Weber circulating fuel system”

The Pelican Search function will yield more.

Thanks David, will give it a try tomorrow.

Grady, your links just open new windows to the general forum index. My searches ended up with a lot of technical troubleshooting or equipment problem fixes. The car is set up at least close to right, once it starts it idles smoothly, accelerates and cruises without issue. Really appreciate the suggestions tho, I'll do some more searching.

On my carb'd 2.0S motor when it's cold:
1)Turn on the pump and let it run for about 30 seconds
2) depress the gas pedal all the way down 3 times, hold it down the 4th time, and fire it up. It has never not started in 7 years.

When it's warm, I tuen on the pump for a few seconds and start it without depressing the pedal. Fires right up...

Garage
do #1 above when the car has not been used for a few days - the gas in the carb bowls evaporates, so that recharges them

mine starts great with motor warm; or in summer with motor warm or cold

if Tair < 55 oF, I have trouble starting when motor is cold & it gets progressively worse as Tair goes lower.

Webers do not have chokes (harms full throttle performance) so that is part of the problem.
