How reliable is a rev limiter rotor?
I installed a rev limiting ignition rotor (Bosch#1 234 332 223)which is supposed to be spec for a 1977 3.0L turbo. I read here that it should cut at about 6500 RPM. I can rev in gear to 7200 with no apparent effect. Do I have a defective rotor or low reading Tach?

Hmm... I've used two different ones, a 6500 and a 6800 and both were very close to their indicated cut off. They have more of a gradual cut off. The electronic rev limiters (3.2+) are much more abrupt and will bounce off the limiter, where as the rotor seems much softer. Can you pull the cut off device back with your finger to be sure it will travel the distance required to ground out the ignition? Other than a defective rotor or incorrect tach, I cannot think of any other reason it would not cut off at the indicated RPM.

I used to have a type 2 VW bus that had a rev limiting rotor. One day it shorted completely and came to a screeching halt. Well coasting halt. I carry a spare rotor in the glove box just in case. The one in my 2.7 cuts out right at red line indicated and sort of bounces when it does.
