74 IROC project - update and gratuitous pics (long)
Finally, a long over due update to my initial posting (from last November) on my 74 IROC project. I apologize in advance for the length of this posting and number of photos but, I wasn't able to post updates as I went along so, it all sort of accumulated here.
The starting place was a 74 steel widebody coupe with a 78 3.0 liter. Here's where we were last year: Finally - pics of the 74 Detail from that posting.... 78 3.0 w/Nikasil cylinders 10.5:1 compression ARP bolts throughout GE60 cams Ported/polished heads (drilled for dual plug) PMO 46mm Electromotive crank fire ignition (plan to install additional coil pack to dual-plug it this winter) Early headers ZF style LSD Weltmeister spring plates Elephant racing poly/bronze spring plate bushings Rennline rear monoballs Weltmeister adj rear anti-swaybar and mounting braces 27mm T-bars Koni adjustable shocks Drilled rear rotors SS brake lines SINCE THEN..... The car went up on stands on January 3rd for a little IROC "make-over" and finally got back on the street in late May. What follows is the result of tooooo many evenings and weekends in the garage. The goals were to rebuild the suspension and brakes, add a front cooler, clean up the interior a bit, add the IROC bumpers and wing and try to lose a few pounds (the car, not me) in the process. After a near life-threatening bout with "while I'm in here" disease, this is where we ended up: Front Suspension and Brakes 22mm torsion bars Bilstein HD inserts Elephant Racing poly-bronze bushings OEM ball joints Turbo Tie-Rods Rennline monoballs Elephant Racing triangulated strut brace Custom brake cooling plates w/ducting Need help with brake cooler backing plates. OEM inner and outer bearings S-Calipers Ferodo 2500 pads Brembo vented rotors Alignment and corner balance. Engine/Electrical Powerhaus front mount oil cooler Added Electromotive coil pack and rewired XDi controller for dual-plugging Replaced (noisy and erratic) Carter fuel pump with Mallory unit and plumbed fuel gauge Clewett Firebraid wires Relocated battery to smugglers box, added external jumper posts and master disconnect switch Interior Replaced factory sound deadener with dyna-mat Appbiz Perlon carpet Safety Devices bolt-in cage Rennshift shifter Sparco EVO-2 seats Schroth 6 point harnesses Dino wheel http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads5/PDR_02201121786151.jpg[/img] Body GT Racing IROC bumper front and rear GT Racing IROC wing IROC side stripes PPG paint - GP White (for the new bumpers and wing only) PPG paint - Chrome Yellow She weighs in at 2410 full of fuel which, aint bad for a steel widebody and is just as happy on the street as on the track. I've been to a couple of track events this year with several more to go and am learning what the car wants but, so far the car is a lot faster than the driver!! I hope to get to the chassis dyno in August, more to satisfy my own curiosity than anything else. There are several cars on this board that are excellent examples of just how much more could still be done but, after all is said and done, I'm pleased with the result. Hopefully, all I'll need over the coming winter is a little freshening and new set of tires. Now, if I just had a set of Lindsey 8 and 10's

Very nice....You have nice wide body there. After all that work in 6 mos, probably a pretty skinny check book too. ;-)
I think the car is screaming for H4s. Are these on your list or do you like the looks of these lights better. Lindsay's, particularly an anodized finish, would look real sweet too. Nice car and thanks for sharing. I love posts with pictures. Don Don

thanks everyone.
Kemo - sure, just when i was going to be content with a new set of tires next year you have to raise the issue of a 3.6 I think I can squeeze plenty out of this light little 3.0 - for now anyway!!Don - you are spot on about the skinny checkbook. Fortunately, I was able to find a few good used parts on this site and, sell a few no longer needed parts here to offset a little. When I first got the car, H4s were on the to-do list but, the more I looked at it, the more I began to like this look as is. As far a wheels, I'm leaning toward Lindsey anodized with black centers but, am half considering Fikse FM5s or Kinese K57 - with anodized outers and black centers as well. Unless I find a good used set with the right offset, wheels/tires won't be in the cards until next year!!

Work in Progress

You should try to see if you can make one of these radio delete plates. I think this is original equipment in a IROC car. I believe this picture is from Jack Olsens car but I saved it a long time ago so I am not sure.

I love the IROC tail. Also nice solution for the rockers... I like the continuation of the yellow stripe from the splitter. Is that front bumper a special one with an integrated splitter? Great looking interior too!!!! |

Matteo - you are correct, the front bumper does have an integrated splitter - if I recall correctly is was the GT Racing part number 43b ( I think). It came out nice but was a PITA to mount and, had to be modified to allow fitment of the front cooler. Unless you kneel down in front of it and really look close you can't tell but, we had to change the profile of the valance from the oil cooler opening to the brake duct on the right side to allow clearence for the oil lines to connect to the cooler. I think it came out pretty nice but, I don't think I would go that route again.

Great looking car. Really.
The IROC radio delete plate is not Jacks' car, IIRC. However, John Risvold has a red car and a plate like that. Maybe thats the car you have in mind. I don't see the front member of a roll cage (which Juack has) and JR's car only runs a roll bar. So, it adds up, but still could be some other car. NO matter, the IROC plates are cool on the right years (not mine). |

Gary it was great meeting you at the Nelson Ledges Fundayz two plus weeks ago. Your car looks great and goes even better.
Your carpet installation around the cage is one of the cleanest I've seen and really adds to the attractivenes of your car. I look forward to seeing at the track in the future. Pete

Gary
what seal did you use for the front bumper / chassis gap? I have an IROC bumper too but have not yet decided on the seal.. I like your solution very much. |

Pete - thanks for the kind words and, it was nice to finally meet you as well. Are you and John planning to be at Mid-Ohio on the 5th w/NASA? If so, we'll catch up again there.
Matteo - The guy that did the paintwork and final fitment for the bumpers used a later model OEM bumper seal but, I can't recall which year. I'm sure I have the detail in my notes - if I find it I'll shoot you a PM with the info.

ozz,
could you pass along the bumper seal information to me as well. Did you use pre-74 seals for the rear quarter to bumper? thx

Gary: John will be there for sure. I'm still on the fence. We went to Gingerman this week-end and I have no tread left on my back tires. As a result, I probably will not attend.

Gary,
I'm in. Wouldn't miss a great one day at Mid Ohio. This Friday one day event last year was great with 4 1/2 hour plus sessions. For me it's a warm up day sine the following Monday and Tuesday I'm enrolled in the Mid Ohio school. We'll have to get our track schedules aligned. It's nice to have a bunch of local Porsche guys together. As Pete said we were at Gingerman this past weekend. Really fun technical track. Lots of open space with ample run-off. Pete and I both took advantage of the run-off, although I think I used it twice and him only once. John John
