72 bumper questions

These are probably really stupid questions, but...............Are these bars under my bumperettes a factory install and should I remove them? Are they there to protect the thing that looks like a radiator peeking out from under the front, which I assume is some sort of oil cooler?

Your car must have come with factory A/C. Those bars are there to protect the front A/C condensor. I wouldn't take them off, especially if your car still has the A/C installed. They're usually a sign of a very original car.

I have them on my 72 which did come with factory AC. They are connected to the frame underneath.

My car was built in February 72, has factory AC and it does not have the protector bars for the factory AC condenser coil.

Other than "originality" is there any reason not to take these bars off? Factory A/C has been removed and the condenser will be coming off. These things stick out and down quite a bit and I'm getting tired of scraping them every time I pull into a drive or parking lot!!

So what is going scrape if they are removed? They sound rare. Take them off and put them in a box for safe keeping. If you sell the car put them back and point them out in the ad. You never know. Sometimes original goofy little parts like this are worth there weight in gold or platinum.

I don't think anything will scrape if I remove them, as they stick out and down quite a bit from the front. I only scrape when I encounter a relatively sharp angle, and I think it is happening "cuz these stick out so far, making the front of the car "longer." They also bother me from a looks standpoint, kinda like a brush guard on the front of a Jeep that never leaves the pavement

They were placed there to protect the air conditioning radiator thingie...sine early 911 air never worked for dog caca, and since your air conditioning has been removed...yeah, I'd pull 'em. Your OIL cooler radiator thingie should be hanging there in the right front fender, near the front...with lines leading to it placed under your right side rocker trim strip...

As Sherman suggests remove but save. On the oil cooler, did 72s come with them ??? I didn't think they did...my 73E didn't...and with a 2.7 in it now, I wish it did.

72 S's had oil coolers in the front fender. I don't think the cooler was anythig special but the thermostat housing and oil lines are all 72 specific. That translates to un-obtanium $$$.

Changing the topic slightly. Has NE1 put an oil cooler in the spot where early front condensors were? The spot obviously worked for cooling an A/C charge why wouldn't work for cooloing an oil charge?
