Strut Insert ID Help
Hi First of all id like to thank the guys who pointed me in the right direction for removing these things, saved me alot of tI'me barking up the wrong tree so to speak!
Right Ive finally got my inserts out and I'm trying to work out which ones they are to make sure i order the right replacement, I'm pretty sure I have a Boge strut as its painted black however my insert dosent resemble the boge inserts Ive seen, Possible another manufacturers insert in boge strut?? please take a look at the picture and gIve me your thoughts! The second thing I'm curious about is that the strut seemed to fall apart on removal, the top dropped off and it left most of its oil inside the strut is this normal or dose it just mean I had really screwed up inserts! Thanks Steve ![]() |

Were the original shocks not actually inserts? Seems to me from looking at these that they are not so much inserts but more the inards of the shock adsorber has the bottom of this unit has holes in it so wouldnt be able to hold the oil on its own without been inside the strut!

That is normal for an OEM Boge strut. You can purchase Bilstein sport inserts, which is what I did. Your current insert has a hole at the bottom because its hydraulic damping medium (aka oil) is contained in the body of the insert. If you choose to use Bilstein inserts, you will drain all the oil out of the body and simply drop in the new insert, as it is self contained. Pretty simple, huh.
P.S. you dont have to create a new thread, since your questions still apply to your original post. Those who have responded, get an email when someone posts again to the original thread. That is of course unless they choose to quit receiving posts to the thread. P.S.S As RandyWebb pointed out in your last thread, different manufacturers make inserts for different OEM struts. I.e. Bilstein makes inserts for Boge OEM struts. Koni makes inserts for Bilstein struts.....So on, and so forth.. Good luck to you, Paul

Paul,
Bilstein never made inserts for KONI struts, and KONI only made inserts for Bilstein struts for a while in the late '80s/early '90s. The early Boge and KONI struts actually used the strut housing as the outer tube of the 'twin-tube shock' design ... and had a larger piston diameter and greater volume of the strut oil contained in that design than could be achieved in an insert. The requirements for effective sealing resulted in the rather massive plug [and difficult disassembly after years of exposure to the elements] ... encountered when attempting to replace/install new inserts!

Did I say that Bilstein made inserts for KONI struts or that KONI made inserts for Bilstein struts? None the less, thank you for the correction.

Ok ive just been to pick these up from the shop and the guy told me that allegedly he has two genuine Boge listed for 72 one is >72 and other 72> and as he didnt know which ones he orded me both. On comparing the two they were identical shape size fittings etc. The only diff been one was a gas automatic the pushes the arm back out when you push it in. The other just an ordinary non gas strut. They were both the same price so I took the gas. Was this the right move?? are the gasses better?

In the future ... you may want to look a bit closer at what you wrote [or implied] before you post snippy answers, or pointless posts with incorrect info, for that matter!!!

Warren,
All I was trying to do was indicate that inserts are made by other OEM's, and that they do not necessarily need to come from your strut OEM to fit his application. BTW, did you ever respond to the mans' original post? I thought not... Why not try to answer the post rather than attempting to correct every nuance of generalized statements which were intended to let the man know that he need not stick with OEM inserts.

It's easy to say I made a mistake... everyone here has.
Now, back to the struts: somebody might want to make up a table with what fits what - diaganol would be the same strut manf. and insert manf. above that would be the matrix of what insert fits what strut (and maybe for what years) - that would solve this common question once & fer all... new questions could just be directed to the table.

KC911,
I see you also missed the basic point... Comprehension is one of the most basic elements of reading! I am sure Warren may now rest at ease knowing that you have chosen to champion his cause. Where Warren indeed may have had to much class to respond to my post; all can plainly see you do not! You are indeed, spot on in your assessment!

I'd like to offer an apology to the group. And also to those I may have personally slighted. I have come to realize no matter the best intentions of ones post, there will be those who will critique regardless of intention.
It was not my intention to speak specifically regarding insert fitement, only to point out that OEM's make replacement inserts for other OEM struts. period. Again my most sincere apologies to all. Hopefully 1972_911T got his questions answered regarding the refreshing of his struts.

After getting your car sitting to your preference, you may want to consider having it aligned and corner balanced.
Best of luck to you... Paul
