broken sc AC

I have recently acquired a 1980 SC Targa with air conditioning that is currently dysfunctional. Main problem I have identified so far is that the idgit who the PO hired to install the carpet simply CUT the capillary tube from the temp switch.

My local dealer was not sure if the capillary was part of the switch, and it has to come from Germany. (4 weeks!) Jeez. Gonna be cool here before the switch gets here!

Two questions.

1. Is the Capillary tube part of the switch, or a separate part?

1. Will the AC work without the capillary tube, at least for testing purposes (assuming everything else is there!)

Any help would be most appreciated! I have searched all of the AC threads here and not seen this particular item discussed.

Thanks.

I am no expert on AC however I did do a R+R this past winter and my system works good so I have some experience. I believe for testing purposes the system will work with the broken capillary line. It is my understanding the tube senses the temp of the evaporator and stops the evap. from freezing so for short term testing I think it will work. I also believe the tube is part of the switch. I'm sure there may be used ones out there you might want to put a WTB ad in the classifieds there's plenty of folks who have removed the AC from their cars.

Jumper around the switch will make it always on, during the hot summer that should be fine. In a 911 you will never get real cold unless you have done something unique to your system. I found replacement switches here at Pelican and I even found a universal one on eBay. Little money.

Thanks. I am not expecting real cold (like my chevy truck) just a bit chilly to start. I want to get the system operational before I invest in some of the upgrades I have read about on here. I am lucky, Western Washington does not get that much really hot weather, but I hope to spend some time travelling a bit with this car, and I like the technical challenge of making it better than the German engineers were able to do.

Re: broken sc AC

cap tube, filled with refrigerant, is part of the switch, provides the compressor shut off feature when evap ices up.

as DonMo said, you can temp. jumper the two male spades on the switch with wires attached (temporarily) (you'll find a solid green and a green with white stripe wires).

if you can find a new themostat drop me a pm
