Engine "bore scope" ? anyone have one....
Hi Guys. We have a 997 engine that requires "internal inspection" for compression loss. Does anyone is MASS have one that I could use for 1 hour?? We give you $$ for your time, parts at cost or work out something to make this happen.
If you or someone you know can help......... please email me at Jim@rietzl.com or call 781-261-5030 and ask for Jim. Thank you. |

Hi Jim, what you are looking for is a boroscope, not bore scope. Sorry can't help in locating one. Sorry, not to be picky or anal, just the engineer in me.

Try the local gun shop, or better the local gunsmith - they will have one

a doctor customer gave me one. 18" probe, great optics, a light on the tip, and you can crank the tip into a U shape. try a used medical equipment dealer.

In case anyone is tempted by the under $300 fiber optic ones advertised in Pano at one time; I bought one and found it to be nearly useless. The "real" ones are are a couple of grand.
A gunsmith will have a "bore scope" - not the same tool and I don't think it would be of use for looking in anything but rifle barrels. I'm emailing a link to this thread to a friend who might have one. -Chris

A gunsmith will have a two items that sound similar. The "bore scope" is used to help align an optical scope. A Borescope allows for inspection of gun barrels (and automotive combustion chambers, etc)

Nice freebie John. We use Olympus scopes for inspecting pipe, adn those suckers are EXPENSIVE! (The last set up I used cost over 50K! IIRC)
I'll have to search the used Medical Supply houses... |

Wow that's some freebie!
Looks like the type of scope a otolaryngologist (Ear, nose and throat specialist) would use. Add: Known as an Endoscope. They come in both rigid and flexible versions...as shown.

I have one of the "cheapie" bore scopes I bought off the web. Its about 3 feet long, a lighted tip, pretty flexible length and an eye piece with focus adjuster and light controls at one end.
You do not get the ability to twist it around and such like the real expensive ones, but it does come in VERY handy! I use it all the time. Its got a magnet attachment and I have used it to find and get dropped nuts and stuff a good bit. Its also very useful to look inside the combustion chambers, down intakes and all around in places you could not see without. I think I paid about $275 for it new. WELL worth the purchase price.
