I have a '91 tiptronic motor. It has a 6 pin plug at the trottle body. My loom has no matching connection. It's from a different motor.
Is this going to cause a problem? Thanks Mike |

The harness from M64/01(manual) and M64/02(tip) are differnent. You do need the harness for the enghine you have.
Another difference The tip harness operates the back up light switch from the shifter in the cockpit, the manual from the transmisssion pin.

Thanks Bill.Thought I nearly had this sorted. This raises another issue. The loom came with Motronic so I guess it is incorrect also? I have had the engine running. It seems to run ok just doesn't idle well. Will it do it any harm? What do you think is the best course of action? Find a complete new harness and motronic unit?

I have a harness which might work It was altered at the DME relay to use a flat pin relay but the engine end is intact. $75 plus shipping
johnsjmc@sympatico.ca (out of town Aug15/22) I also just saw another post seller on the parts page ebay 7993502727 ( no association)

It could probably be made to work if you understand how the diffferences affect functions. The throttle housings are different and the micro switch and throttle-valve switchs are also different. I have no idea of why or how they work

Knowing that I am not certain the harness was from a manual or that the one I am usung now is. I know my engine ran fine with the altered harness in another car (1977) but when I moved it to my 80 I used an uncut harness and Steve Ts wiring to clean up the under seat area . I appeared to have matching plugs for everything in the engine area on both harnesses. Mike B when you say plug doesn,t match .Do you mean it doesn,t plug in or that it plugs in but the pin count is different? If it runs but doesn,t idle well That might be the light flywheel .

The harness just doesn't have another lead left for the throttle body. So everything is plugged and I am a 6 pin connector short!

There should be another lead left even if it's a manual harness correct?

Then the harness I have is a manual harness .The computer end is untouched as well The alteration was to allow the use of a non Porsche DME relay. The previous install was done several years ago by a Tech on his own without a kit and the owner had no records of how it was wired so I started over. All theDME plugs under the seat are there and OK except the DMErelay plug so this harness will have to be used along with yours.
I,m still wondering how the tip motor would run without a signal from the airflow meter?

YES!!There has to be a lead for the airflow meter on either engine. It comes out of the handfull that go around back and connect to all the throttle body switches. I recall it,s about 14" long may be fallen down behind.

Bill you never cease to amaze me with your almost instant retreival of photos of such things as TIP harnesses ,hose connections etc. I would have to pull it out of a box ,find box first, find camera ,and I haven,t figured out how to add Pics to a reply yet.

There is a lead to the airflow metre. It plugs in from around the back and is tricky to reach. The missing connection is on the oppisite side. Still odd it runs. Goes well too. Just the idle problem.

I mis understood I was thinking the flat plug at the airflow meter. How many plugs are on your throttle body and what colour is the one we,re talking about. I can look at mine.

I'm amazed also.... Ok I'm defo missing a lead. I thought I was onto the problem when I noticed insultion tape around the harness about where the lead should come out. I unwraped it but couldn't see any cut wires. Better have another look.

Ok can't sleep now! Looked at my harness and can't see any cut wires. On that branch of the harness I have 6 plugs. Should I have 7? When I got this engine it had just been rebuilt. I noticed on the air flow metre some writting that made me think it had been added to the motor and was not the original. Could I have an extra plug on the motor rather than be missing a lead? Does that make sense
