where do people put crossovers?
Hi,
I've just bought a pair of MB Quart Reference 6.5's, and don't know where to put the crossovers. I read one post where a guy just put them in a plastic bag with zip ties and put them in the doors. But looking at the design of the crossovers, i don't think the electrical components would last long with the slamming of the doors all the time. Any ideas? And also while i'm posting, My speakers say power handling 60-120w RMS. My head unit is a Pioneer P1, so it has inbuilt amplification of 60w RMS. Is an amp required? I have a kenwood amp that is 110w RMS x 4, but it will be a hassle to wire in. And will there be a noticeable change in quality?

Mine are in plastic and in the doors, but they're held in place w/ a good wad of metal roofing mastic. They've been there going on 3 yrs, and no issues, and were tight this weekend when I was tracking down a rattle.

The P1 puts out 60W RMS x how many channels? If it is 4 channel you could bridge to 2 channels for more power. Are you sure the speakers aren't 60W RMS, 120Peak?
If you have to drive the P1 to max to power the speakers sufficiently, your distortion would likely be higher than if you used your 4x110 kenwood. I say hook it up and fool around without the amp first. If you blow a fuse or it sounds like poop, you know you need more power.

Under the wood in the passenger floorboard. It was a tight fit because they were oversized.

In the doors, I made a foam cradle for them.

it just says power handling 60-120W.. i don't know if thats RMS.
The P1 is 60WRMS x 4. But its a shame not to use its preouts, 5V! I read somewhere that underpowering good quality speakers runs the risk of melting the coils, because your using volume to make up for the underpower. But the head unit is 60W RMS x 4, so its peak is probably around 100w potentially right? So then wouldn't it be much the same amplification from both?..

Match the RMS power, ignore the peak. Peak is momentary power only, and really means nothing with respect to the quality or power of the system.

60-120 ==>60 RMS, you should be fine with the P1's 4x60RMS. The kenwood puts out more power than you need, you could still use it if you want. Like zoanas said, amtch RMS and you'll be fine.

like JO - I wrapped mine in foam sheeting and put them in the doors
- not sure if it might help to keep them close to the speakers, but I did that anyway.

I installed them inside the door storage area way foreward under the handle.

MB Quarts love to be driven, install the amp too. Your midbass notes will be appreciably cleaner. You don't want to bridge the stereos output, bridging is good for amps that drive subs, not fullrange; too much distortion. Turn the gain on the amp about 75% to start.

Maybe this has been covered to death in other threads, but how successful have people been in noise dampening the engine compartment?? Seems to me it would make upgrading sound systems alot easier..
