What's that hole for?

In the front boot of my 75 911 Carrera, under the carpet on the passengers side is a lid opening down to a fairly decent little box area. At the side where the steering comes through (about midships in the car) there is a large tube like opening (est. 3-4" across) coming up from the bottom that is covered with some sort of cloth. What the hech is that for? I don't have air cond. if that's a factor. Could be blocked off from years ago when it was stripped down and painted and maybe not removed afterward?

It's called a smugglers box, some folks like to move their battery there, others put their stereo amps in there, others come up w/ their own creative uses

The tube like opening, I believe, appeared when factory air started to be an option. It was on all the cars from thet point, AFAIK.

Thanks guys. Should it be sealed off so no dust penatrates the "smugglers box"? The cloth allows fine dust in.

Bill,
Seriously? I was pretty sure from the way some of my old P-cars smoked it was for applewood or coal storage....

There should be a drain hose that routes through the smuggler's box from the air intake plenum to the ground. If not complete, rain/wash water will collect in this area.

I was just thinking Mr. Verberg, with that amazing new "track machine" you've just gotten how is you have time for this Pelican stuff? If that sweetheart were sleeping in my stable I'd be out there letting the reality sink in and stroking every inch of her, hell, I'd probably sleep in it (at least the first week or so). Again congrats!!!

Yes, I believe there's a plastic cover for that.
