911 Factory Manual content
I recently purchased Vol III and Vol IV of the Porsche factory manuals (for Models 1972 on) inorder to be able to do more repairs on my 75 911S. However, I was surprised to find that the manuals contained very little "assembly - disassembly" step by step instructions in the engine section like Wayne's books and even Haynes to a certain extent. I was wondering if all this info was in the previous volumes and if I need to fork out a few hundred more bucks to get the info I need to do most of the engine work. The transmission section, by contrast is very thorough.

You are correct that you will need all the other volumes. The later volumes build on the earlier ones.

I have the "middle" manuals ('72-'77) and they aren't much use. I found the later Carrera manuals have more useful information.
-Chris EDIT: My mistake, they have '72-'83 manuals.

Thanks for the info guys.
Chris, Which manuals do you have? Do they have a good breakdown on the engine? Since I have a 2.7 I don't guess they'd help me. Do any of the manuals cover this engine in detail? I'm about to start assembly of my rebuild and was looking for something to backup Wayne's book. Jack |

As Kurt said, each builds on the previous.
I just posted on another thread: “ It would be useful to have Wayne’s two books: How to Rebuild & Modify Porsche 911 Engines 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 and the Haynes, Bentley and Factory workshop manuals. We can provide excerpts but there is no substitute for reading (and re-reading) the real thing. Each presents the same basic information, just in a different way with different illustrations. It is not uncommon for someone new to this to misinterpret some operation using only one source. When in doubt, stop and ask questions on the Forum.” In addition to the manuals are the small “Spec Books” illustrated on p. 7 of Wayne’s engine rebuilding book. Of course you need a legal CD of PET (Porsche Ersatztele Katalog – Porsche Replacement Parts Catalog) from our host (000.043.400.05). As good as Wayne’s book is, it still assumes you know a lot. It could go from 223 pages to 2000 pages and still not cover everything possible. This is where it is valuable having all of the commercially available information in hand and then ask every little question on the Forum. Best, Grady |

I've got the '66 - '72 manuals and that is where all the good stuff is. But you still need the later volumes if you have a new car since they specify the specifics (including the changes) for the newer cars.

Volumes I & II are the '65 thru '71 set ...
Volumes III, IV, V, & VI are the '72 thru '83 set of updates ... including the only info available on the CIS system, 915 transaxle, and electrical diagrams for '72 thru '83 ... Well, somebody held out on you ... the Vol. V and VI binders won't be easy to find alone!
