Question Is an SC-cam exactly the same as a Carrera-cam?

Is it possible to use a Carrera cam in an SC and Visa versa?
Like same lift, lobe-position, bearing size, etc.??????
Thank you.

I could shop for either cam, have a set reground to 964-specs and keep my SC cams just in case.

Thanks guys, here are my options:
I have an offer of a pair of 964-cams but they didn't look clean in the pictures; the seller is getting an opinion from a camgrinder on their actual condition. I would prefer 964 cams.
Next option is to regrind my SC cams to a 964 profile.
Camgrinder John sees nothing wrong with that and informs me that only about .015" would come off the base-circle. But I don't know how deep the hardening is on these cams? How does regrinding affect the hardening?
This is a long-term, slow project on a seperate engine which gives me time but I need to make a decision at some point.

The hardening, according to John, will still be there on the regrinds.

HIJACK--sort of.
1) What's advantage of 964 cams on 3.2 Carrera?
2) Would this be smog legal in Cali?

thanks
Mike

The 964-cam just gives you more lift; meaning: The intake valves stay open longer to suck in more mixture. That will only work if you also get larger intake runners with ~38.5mm I.D. and bore out the heads to 38.5mm.
The early SC's '78-'79 had larger runners but in '80, the I.D. changed to 34mm.
Does a Carrera have the same smaller intake runners as the '80-'83 SC's?
A change of cams will not affect smog checks but changing the cams alone makes no sense; other stuff will also have to be done to give you more HP.

IIRC, the 964 lobes are shaped a bit differently - better technology after 15 years... This is imp. b/c it modifies the accelerative forces that the valve sees.

I think Randy is right, the lobe "ramp" I believe is a little steeper as well. The cam is a good upgrade if you taking apart the motor anyway, not sure I would do it just for the sake of it. The 3.0 I just rebuilt seemed well suited for the 964 grind we put in it, made a nice strong smooth motor. Car should still pass Cali emissions easily. It has the same lobe center as the SC cam which limits overlap and helps it run fairly clean.

The 964 cam works well in both the 3.0 and 3.2 engines. I think most people would agree the upgrade is a good "while your in there upgrade" and not worth the effort of an engine drop just to change cams.
MY new "DC-13" profile is in between the SC and 964 cam. No feedback on the cam yet, but I predict it will work best in the low compression ratio 3.0 litres.
I have never heard of a 964 cam not passing an emmisions test.

I have 964 cams in a 78 motor. I hope you are uping the compression on that motor along with the regrind. Also ssi's and two in one out or two in two out exhaust. If you do just the cams I think you will be alittle bit dissapointed in the out come. engine will pull hard but you will lose low end grunt. Atleast this is what happened with my car.

Thumbs down

Nothing like stealing someone's thread; along with other stuff, this post has made me decide on how to proceed with my rebuild.
Odd how it works out sometimes; get more 911-time before winter comes.

'75 Carrera with a 3.0 liter sounds like fun.
That's similar to my set-up except I went for 98mm Mahle cylinders with JE pistons. These 98mm JE's are a work of art; custom-made 9.8 CR and matched to the barrels by EBS.
I am doing a SS 3.2 just for the hell of it, my real aim is to find a clean 964 and do some mods to it.
Did you stay with 6's or were you able to fit a 7 in the rear?
