early strut question

when was the changeover from the pinch bolt to the wedge pin on the early M caliper struts?

was it mid 72?

I'm asking because I have a set of boge pinch bolt type from a 70' , but am thinking about getting a set with the wedge pin ball joint connection that will accept my current koni inserts.

any other insights to share?

thanks,
b.

I though it changed between 73 and 74, but could be wrong. Who makes your struts? Is the part # for the insert the same for pre 73 and post 74?
Why not sell your struts complete and buy new / used ones? Bilsteins are the most modifiyable, it seems. (keep in mind) there is a strut insert and a strut housing. Bilsteins are the easiest to raise (raise struts to lower the car while maintaing closer to stock geometry).
Is that helpful information? I'd be glad to show you, I'm up in Encinitas, but not this weekend.
Doug

I thought it was for the '72 model year. I'm in the same boat with my '70.

All '72 models used the wedge-bolt, per the factory parts catalog ...

threads on the spindle, castle nut and retaining cap are also different "m" vs "s". I found out the hard way

the inserts are brand new Koni #402419
alt # T861647 - Koni insert F911/912 69-74
they are in my Boge struts.

I have the later wedge pin balljoints on the car.

These M caliper Boge use the pinch bolt. Not compatible with my car without changing the ball joints.

I am feeling like maybe it would be a good idea not to backdate, but to get struts to match the car. Along with other info i've recieved about pinch bolt mounting assemblies.

The easy way from my point of view would be to just get a strut housing and put all my parts on it, i.e. hubs, bearings, inserts, rotors calipers.

or is that the hard way. ???

what is your goal? are you trying to mount a set of S calipers, or just use a pair of shocks from a later strut? 'cause if you are upgrading at all, why not get struts with the wider caliper bolt spacing and be rid of the cast iron m calipers.

The change was with the ’72 model year.

Whatever you do, use the opportunity to get rid of the pinch bolt type and replace them with the wedge pin type. The ball joint is also different between the two.

I won’t get in a ’69-’71 911 with pinch bolt and instruct on track. I’m serious! I get under and look.

Best,
Grady

thats interesting. hmm.

I'm fine with the M caliper, dont think i need more brakes up front. Just looking to sort out the balljoint issue.

so it looks like a boge M Caliper strut from a 73 or 74 would be the safest. Possibly a 72? still not sure on that.

The Koni insert for boge strut assembly only works in the Boge strut correct?

pretty sure koni insert will work in the koni or boge strut, definitetly not in the bilstein. if your doing koni's I'm assuming you will be doing some performance oriented driving. if that's the case, do the s calipers now, m brakes will not 'perform' period. btw, lots of alternatives to the s caliper spacing via aftermarket adapter kits for even later model calipers. none for the m struts.
good luck
