i have a 1982 911sc. i just replaced the engine temp sensor, (930-606-117-00) purchased at pelican of course. the reason for this was an erratic cold idle. when the engine was warmed up after a several minutes i grounded the switch and BINGO it ran great! took it for a drive and it felt like i had an extra 10 horsepower. so i replaced the switch and at the same time replaced the o2 sensor, again purchased from pelican. fired it up the next morning and i have the same problem, erratic idle until the temp comes up! grounded the temp sensor again and once again it ran great. i attached the ground wire and the engine quickly clears up. i don't think the new switch is bad (fool) and have not pulled it out for a freezer test. what else should i be looking for?

I'm NOT an expert, but I wonder if the Warm Up Regulator is doing it's job. How does your car run once the motor is warmed up and you have not grounded the temperature sensor? How does the car run if you remove the oil filler cap? (a drop in idle could indicate that there is an air leak) I'm sure I've missed some things here.

once the engine is up to temp it runs fine with the old sensor in and not grounded. i replaced the oil cap a few weeks ago thinking this would fix my problem. when i took the old cap off there was no change to the idle and the new cap is just that a new cap with no changes.

I hope you replaced it with 911-617-117-00, not 930-617-117-00
![]() When you say irratic idle, does it hunt? What's it doing? If it runs well when warmed up, it's either cold fuel and air that's out of sych. When did the cold idle issue start? Any correlation to ambient air temp? You may also have an irratic cold start injector, but don't go their yet. Have you checked that your AAR is closing as it should and not sticking... You'll have to provide more info. |

i did replace it with a 930! i thought this was wrong but the local euro repair guy, said this is what i needed. what or how does this effect anything? could this be my problem? if so how? i understand that diffrent vehicles have diffrent values but a thermal switch is a thermal switch right? yes it hunts with the old sensor installed and the car would stall if you came to a stop within the first minute of driving. when the car stalled it would not refire. i found that if i lifted the top of the air box up slightly and then let it back down that the car would refire and drive fine from then on, this only happens when dead cold and with in one minute of driving, after that your good to go for the rest of the day.
ambient air temps dont seem to be a problem, we have been in the 100 for the last two months and this problem started in april. i have not checked the aar, aux air ?, i did replace the aux air valve/decel valve about a month ago. again with the thermal sensor grounded it runs fantastic, cold starts it hunts for about 30-45 seconds then idels great and runs great with out stalling or hesitation. |
