Value of a 78 3.0 engine???

I've been talking to someone who has a 1978 3.0 for sale. It was professionally rebuilt 3k ago with new bearings, P/C, Carerra tensioners, WebCam 20-21's, delivar head studs. The engine is turn key with all the original smog equipment and exhaust. It has a flywheel but no clutch.

Any idea of the value?

Thanks-
Craig Backer

3.0 are a good sell around here. If it has docs for the rebuild by a good shop I could see it bringing 5k - 6k.

Interesting. Low miles 3.2's appear to be available for similar money. Why would anyone want the hassle of CIS for similar money?

One of the biggest reasons is ease of replacement. I can imagine in Cali that emissions issues would come into play with a motor swap.

It is worth less with dilavar head studs than it would be if it had steel head studs. I personally wouldn't buy one with the dilivar studs even if they are new, but others would.
Still, it should fetch as much as slider posted assuming that all the documentation is on the up and up, and it has some kind of warranty that is wasn't pulled because it was damaged.

What sets the value is the cost to rebuild a 3.0
If people have a tired or broken engine they can either pay $6k or more to have it rebuilt which takes time and is a hassle, or they can buy a rebuilt engine like this and sell their engine as a rebuildable core for a grand or two.
Buying this one for $6k makes more sense than rebuilding an engine for $6k, again assuming that everything was done right and well documented.

I've seen lots of 3.2s for sale in this range but I can't recall seeing one with 3k on the recent rebuild.

BTW, I love CIS and don't think it's a hassle. I am one sick puppy

Sammyg2,

I need to talk with you more (offline maybe) about Turbo'ing the SC. I am about to do the same to mine this winter and would like to stay with the CIS in the beginning. I have started to collect parts... MUHAhahaha

I bought my '78 3.0 with zero miles about a year ago for $4000. It was stock, but I later put 20/21 cams in. Now it has Webers and it runs excellent.

Craig: Dilavar studs on a professional rebuild? Hmm.
You mention P/C as in new? What kind? KS Alusil or Mahle Nikasil? What size? 95mm? If the P/C's are new, why were 98mm P/C's not used to make it into a SS 3.2?
Did this engine ever run?
