Question tranny leak after rebuild - pic

My tranny was rebuilt 4 1/2 months ago. Now this. It's been going on for a couple of weeks.

I trust the mechanic to do the right thing but I thought it might be wise to get some opinoins on the right thing.

What is the fix? Is that a gasket? Does the tranny have to be removed?

I hate the down time.

Thanks

Looks like a gasket failure. I'm surpised it took that long for the leak to happen. Same thing happened to me after my rebuild three years ago except there was a pool of tranny fluid under the car the morning after I picked up the car and yes, the engine/tranny had to come back out. The mechanic was pissed (not my mechanic anymore)as he had to pull the engine/tranny to fix a $3.00 mistake.

Good luck!

This rebuild was one problem after the next at least the wrench made it right each time and it does shift so smooth.

What's in the picture took 2 weeks to seep out with only a couple of drops on the floor.

Do you think it'll be OK to wait a month or so till it time for a valve adjustment or should this be

You may want to alert the mechanic about the problem now.
See how he will handle it. Then decide if you want to wait.

The tranny could probably wait but...

Use metalic paint (copper) next time.

Sounds to me like the mechanic is a well meaning fellow but just not up to speed on 915's. I can't tell if he used gaskets or just used sealant.
Pull the trans. Take the nose cone off, scape all the gasket material off and address any nicks or gouges in the sealing surface.
Smear some sealant into a new gasket (Loctite 518, Curil T, 3Bond 1211, Audi transmission sealant, etc) and reinstall.
That gasket is part # 915.301.351.00
There is no reason for one of those transmissions to leak from a case seam.

if it was mine I would be calling the mechanic asap to make sure he is going to make good on this thing. The longer you wait the more reason he will find to not take care of it.

Take Chris's advice, he is the Guru of 915's. I've seen his work. He would make German Engineers proud.

Thanks, I'll stop by his shop tomorrow. It's the owner that has been standing behind his guys work. He's been so great about taking care of the problems and I know he hasn't made in money on this job, I feel like giving him future work.
I guess at some point you just gotta move on.

I feel your pain. I had nearly a full rebuild done on my 915 (all bearings, syncros, dog teeth, sliders, etc.). The wrench that owns the shop is a Germany guy who has a certificate hanging from his wall stating he is a "Certified Porsche Mechanic." He told me he worked in the Porsche Factory in Stuttgart Germany for two years and was very experience in 915 trannys. Well they ended up dropping the engine/tranny five times before all the issues were addressed including the bad gasket and to tell you the truth the tranny still does not shift smooth. I hesitate between each shift and about 50% of the time regardless of the gear I'm going into either up or down, it feels like it is binding and I have to force it in. He also was very accomodating in trying to fix everything and I know he did not make a dime on me. However I will never give him another piece of business. As JW says, 915s are not brain surgery.

If I were you, I would contact him and make him fix it correctly, then find a new wrench.

Good luck!
