HELP, Gearbox stuck in 2nd and does not move

Hello,

I am a new member of this forum. I drive a 1978 911 SC with 3,2 carrera engine, and 915 gearbox. Tonight as I was driving home, I shifted from 1st to 2nd agressively, and as I lifted the clutch nothing happened, as if it was neutral. I tried to move the lever, but its stuck in 2nd gear and wont come out. Have I broken something ? PLEASE HELP. I love this car, but can't stand being left in the middle of the road. I tried to find other posts, but couldn't find the same situation as mine. Lever does not come out from second, and the car doesnot move.

sounds like it could be the linkage slipped. I'm not sure about the 78, but right behind the seats in the middle, remove the cover and see if the shifter linkage slipped off of the shift rod from the transmission.

Does the shifter wobble around freely, or is it stuck?

The 915 trans is susceptible to explosion of 1st and 2nd gear gear teeth. When this happens it is not uncommon for the slider to break the hub and lock into the gear you were in when the gear teeth break.
If the engine stops when the clutch is let out I would say you were stuck in two gears at the same time. This phenomenon is common after a trans overhaul. What happens is that the lock-out detent for reverse is inadvertently placed in the wrong place allowing the trans to go into reverse and another gear at the same time. If the problem is the latter, you can take the shift cover off the side of the trans and move the reverse shift shaft to place it in neutral.

The cure for both of the problems I describe above is to disassemble the trans and repair it.

Hello,

I took my car to my mechanic, and he said he fixed the lever problem. Didn't get much explanation though. He said it will happen again. Not very happy now. I lose my trust in it, since its a problem that could happen anytime living you in the middle of nowhere. Do I need to strip the gearbox ?
