I'm considering buying a 1984 911 Euro that the owner calls "Venetian Blue". But neither the "Red Book" or the "Original Porsche 911" list Venetian Blue (code 35U) as an available color until 1987. Does anyone have another source that says that Venetian Blue was available for 1984?
Another strange thing is that the Porsche information that I received from www.e-partssales.com for the car's VIN says "Main Paint: Campaigns (DS3072)". Is this the Euro name for Venetian Blue? |

Paintscratch.com oonly shows Glacier Blue and Slate Blue Metallic Clearcoat. Perhaps it was paint to sample.

Wine Red does not show available for '83, but the Factory Manuals show it, and that is the colour of my '83. Paint to order or less common paints are not that uncommon on the 911.
Check the body colour versus the colours everywhere else. lift up the carpets in the boot. check the engine compartment. If you are like me and can't see the 50 shades of white, take someone with you who can or have this checked as part of a PPI.

Don't be too surprised if the owner doesn't know the true name of the color. He may not be trying to pull a fast one at all.
My car is code 516 - Sahara Beige. I encountered an original owner of a '77 recently at the Pomona Swap meet with a car I was sure was the same. He'd owned his '77 since new and insisted it was "Champagne Yellow". It wasn't, it had the same 516 code. He was shocked. I saw Champagne at the Verntura show and while it looks quite close, it isn't the same. Check on the inside lip of each wheel well. They should be stippled with the same treatment as the wheel wells. If they are not that is a somewhat reliable indication that that fender has been swapped with an aftermarket reproduction due to collision damage. If it is only stippled in certain areas, then it has been repaired and the stipple finish not replaced. Hope this helps. - Dan

paint code
Check the paint code on your car. Some cars had "special order" paint". My 80 SC car has code 107 which was not available for 1980, it was a special order. 107 is continental orange which was available in earlier years. Yours may be a special order which was available in earlier years but not for 1984. Hope it helps. aircool

What about looking at the paint color decal inside the trunk over by the right front wheel well? Or is that what you meant, aircool? My US car is identified as being "Venezia Blau" or something like that, as well as 35U on that badge.

The car is >3000 miles away so it is not easy to check the paint code sticker. However, the owner posted lots of good pictures at http://www.tonygarcia.org/911carrera. One of the pictures shows the placard on the right innner trunk wall but the resolution is not high enough to make it legible.
This is a picture of the information that I received from www.e-partssales.com: ![]() |

I have sent an PM back to Art about this paint code issue.
I can't see any photos of the paint tag on this car so that is not much help but I have never heard of a special order paint being used on a 911 that wasn't available for 3 more years. Yes, Porsche would paint a car with past colors if ordered that way but not future colors. Seems to me that it is a repaint. Why don't you have the owner order up a Certificate of Authenticity to prove to you that it has not been repainted another color. ![]()

Art forwarded me this photo from the trunk of the '84 Carrera.
![]() That photo tells me alot of information. The paint information is on the decal on the left of the metal tag. The color code is 661 which is slate blue metalic (nice looking color BTW) or Schieferblau Metallic. The '9' is the place of paint application which is the Porsche factory and '3' is the paint manufacturer, which is Herberts. The X6 below it those numbers is the auxiliary code for this paint. I don't quite understand why the owner thinks this car has Venetian Blue Metallic paint. The paint in the trunk is original, you can tell from the black tar-like material put on the shock mounting hardware.

repaint
I told you the guy's (Fryardds) an expert. It also helps to see the paint code. I looked at a Targa yesterday, the owner could only tell me it was "metallic blue". I looked at the tag,..Venetian blue. His reply.."Oh, is that the color?". Anyway hope the sale goes through.
