68S Finally Fixed!

First of all I would like to thank all of the guys on this board for their help.
When I bought my car 2 years ago it wouldn't rev over 3500 rpm. I rebuilt the carbs and it would go to 5000 rpm. But I never could get it to line up on the timing marks. It should be 30 degrees at 6000 rpm but the only way it would rev past 5000 was to set the timing at 36-38 degrees at 6000 rpm. I knew this was not right so I didn't drive the car much.
To add to the frustration was the fact that I had to recharge the battery every time I wanted to drive it, even after I replaced the voltage regulator and the alternator checkd out OK.
Here is a list of problems that I encountered to get my car to run correctly:
1. The charging issue turned out to be that the wire from the alternator and the wire going to the battery were not connected.
They both go to a terminal block on the inner left side rear fender.
There are two terminals on the block and there was a wire on each terminal. I put both wires on one terminal and solved the problem. Maybe these two terminals were linked together through the plastic at one time?
2. Sealed the gas tank to keep crud out of carbs.
3. Cleaned carbs again - can do it blindfolded now.
4. The big one.....Cam Timing. The cam timing was way out of spec for my engine. .030 on one side and .035 on the other. So I bought the correct tools and adjusted the cams with the engine in the car. Those cam nuts were tight! Other than that it really wasn't a bad job.
5. Since the car was down anyway I decided to to do some painting and replace all of the nuts and bolts on the top. When I took the intake manifolds off I discovered that the opening in the intake gaskets was smaller than the ports in the head. Gaskets must have been for a "T".
6. While cleaning the intake manifolds I discovered a couple of cracks in the runners.
So after 2 years of troubleshooting on my first Porsche it is finally running great. The car is a pleasure to drive now. I still have just a little miss after 6500 rpm. My next project will be to add a Bosch CDI. I think that will take care of the high rpm's.

GREAT!

Now you have the pleasure to drive. What are you doing sitting in front of the computer? The weather is beautiful today.

Thanks for posting the results and the steps you went through. That is very helpful for others to know how detailed one must be when chasing a problem.

Best,
Grady
