Need a Primer on Axles

I seached and couldn't come up with the kind of info that I'm seeking, so I thought I'd make (that rare) post. OTOH, if someone has a link or source, then that would be greatly appreciated.

I have a special mix of components I'm trying to match, but have a basic (but perhaps difficult to answer) question(s). I have '89 Carrera wheel flanges for which I haven't yet done a spline count on. What stub axles, by application, will fit these hubs? So far, outside of the '89 Carrera axles, I believe 930 and turbo look will fit the spline and their axial length is correct (understanding that these are separate stub axles not integral to the axle assembly). How about 944/951, which have a seal flange on the stub, but are the spines the same? How about 928; does the spline and length fit the '89? Ditto for 968, 993 and 996? I do realize that axle assemblies vary in length, where stub axles are integral. Though not essential, the corresponding approximate axle lengths (where applicable) would be nice too.

I have checked some of the usual sources, but no one seems to know for certain, short of doing a physical fit up.....for which few are willing to offer any time for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
