Oil cooler help, please...Spal and oil cooler air scoop

It is becoming more evident that I should drop the trombone cooler I have on my car and install the Carrera cooler I bought a few months ago. With that, I've already located through Pelican the correct mounting brackets and hoses that I need for the Carrera cooler. I would also like to install a fan that can be operated manually and possibly an oil cooler air scoop.

My question is, are both the oil cooler air scoop offered by Pelican and an electric fan overkill? Also, I am looking with much interest at the Spal 7.5-inch fan, which seems to have a good reputation on this board. I would want to operate this fan manually, via a switch.

I'd like some feedback from anyone who uses the Spal 7.5-inch fan and/or an oil cooler air scoop.

As for the Spal fan, which did you purchase? A "push" or "pull" version? 12 or 24 volt? And if you use the Spal 7.5-inch fan, what mounting brackets did you use from Spal for the fan?

And to repeat the first question, is the oil cooler air sccop and fan overkill?

My car is a daily driver and as is the case with L.A., sometimes caught in very bad traffic.

Thanks for your time.

I'd skip the scoop, personally, and get a pusher fan.

Thanks, Jack. That sounds like a good plan.

David,

I used to see 240-250 with only the trombone on the 405 in the Sepulveda pass.

with the manually/auto fan and the cooler scoop, I see it get to 215 maximum, then back down to 210 after making it right about the 405/5/14 freeway split.

Get the push fan and, instead of the scoop, have your bumper notched to get easier air flow to the cooler.

The scoop puts in more cfm at freeway speeds than the fan but the fan puts in more cfm sitting in traffic.

Use the scoop and fan. I do, it rules.
7.5" pusher, 12 volt. fanman.com if Noah's doesn't work out. It will come with some additional attachable mounting 'feet' and you will need to use one.

Manual switch. Don't know what year 911 you have, but on my '82SC on the left side of dash between the left most two guages, you will feel a hole behind the vinyl/leather cover. You can mount a mirror/headlight washer switch in there. It is for the rear wiper switch, so if you have that then the location is already in use.

You also need a bosch relay to act as a soleniod b/c that little switch can't handle the juice. If you need a part number and hookup instructions, shoot me a PM, and I'll dig it up.

This is all good advise I followed from another Pelican - Vash. Here's the thread for his install: my carrera cooler install, so far
Here are some pics to show what I'm talking about:

horn relo mount

Here is Vash's handywork to reposition the horns.
Cut half the brack off and cut the original mounting tab from the bracket.

Then, reshape the mount plates that connect the horns to the bracket as necessary after removing the welded on nuts (Vash twisted his off, I ground mine off). Then, these mounting plates (1) shares the bracket to headlight bucket mount point and (2) the other uses the existing hole in the bracket - evidenced on mine by the shiney head of the nut.

I am going to add the Spal fan to my carrera cooler this winter, as well. The picture in this thread shows it attached to the middle of the cooler. I have seen others attach it to the top of the cooler. Any theories on WHERE to attach the fan to the cooler (top, middle, bottom)???

Thanks,
Dan

middle of cooler is just where it fit on my car to provide maximum clearance between tire and cooler.

Yessir: I'm getting all the materials together now...(thanks, Noah, Sergio and Doug).

It was suggested I use a rear wiper switch to hardwire the fan for on/off purposes. The switch would actually go in the dash between the speedometer and clock, where there is a small faux toggle switch cover that resembles a power window switch. Originally, I wanted to go through my fog light switch in the middle-top portion of the dash.

What do you guys think about this idea?
