convertible motor problem
Another problem. Like I said again I have a 1988 911 convertible, and I'm trying to replace the convertible top motor. I have a haynes manual but it sucks and and says nothing about any of the problems that I have. Does anyone know of a website or something that can help me out. I cant even find the convertible motor. Thanks.

Which motor are you referring to? The "lock-down" motor/mechanism in the headliner, or the actual gearbox, which retracts the roof?

There is a Gearbox Motor in the rear side panel, which is attached to a cable that runs in/along the metal frame towards the headliner.
Maybe your cable has snapped, or your gearbox is stuffed. What's it not doing?

cab top motors
actually there are 3 motors that work the top.
two are in the leading edge of the top under the trim, one on the left side and one on the right. those lock the top in place after it is up and unlocks the top for it to go back (down). the other motor is behind the back panel behind the rear seats (behind the carpeted panel) that motor has 2 cables that look like speedometer cables leading to the gear mechanisms one on each side of the car behind the panel where the rear speakers are... There is so much going on to get that top up and down correctly. Ask me how I know. By the way if you break those drive cables from the motor to the gearbox they can be fixed without buying new ones sometimes. If you need help fixing the top or aligning it let me know. |

Alright I have now replaced every electrical component to the convertible top, and checked all the cables and gears, and even checked all the wiring, and the thing still wont work. Any other suggestions? This thing is really starting to frustrate me!

Are the lockdown motors in the headliner un-latching? Can you hear the rear gearbox motors winding?

Its not doing anything. The lock down motors are released and have been for like 3 months. but the rear motor isnt doing anything either. The only thing i hear is the control unit clicking when i hit the button.

One thing you might check is the top microswitch on the folding top transmission (gearbox). It should be adjusted to an open position. If the top microswitch is closed nothing will work. It never comes into play during normal operation.

Also, you said the top lockdown motors are released. If the top is up. They need to be in the locked position for the top to operate. All these motors are signaling the control box and have to be in synch. for the top to work.

One more reason to convert (no pun intended) to a targa! No motors to contend with, just as much open air, and same leaks. Just kidding.
