Which crossover line with 911 gearbox?

What do you guys with 911 gearboxes ('70/71 vintage) do for the oil crossover line? My race car came with the early flexible crossover line that goes over the bell housing. But that rubber line runs very near the headers (no heat exchangers) and is starting to split. It seems like a bad idea to have this rubber line so close to the headers. I had started to fit a '74 line -- the hard line that goes under the engine. But that one interferes with the clutch cable termination that is flush with the face of the bell housing. I tried bending the pipe with little success.

Is there a good solution for this problem? Does anyone sell a line that works for this application?

I use the old style hoop one (but my type 911 gearbox is a odd installation - in a '73 w/ an '86 engine)

Randy, I don't understand which hoop one you mean. Do you use the rubber one that goes over the engine, or the solid one that goes under? If the latter, then how do you avoid the interference with the clutch cable?

I think you are stuck with the hose that goes over the transmission. I don’t recall any other solution. Is yours with reusable fittings? If so, you can replace just the hose. When faced with that problem, I insulated the hose and put a little heat shield on the header.

What I ended up doing was cutting up several of the lines that I had and welding up pie slices of pipe to make up the line that I needed.

hoop one = older stock hard line that goes under the trans.

I think Bill V. has posted pics of it before if you search.

There are also steel flex lines you can use (over the top) - and pics of those have been posted also.

Where does the line hit? I am using a 1971 stock crossover line and it clears fine, about to update to the 1974- line and wondering whether there will be interference when I get the heat exchangers off.

The interference is specific to the '70/'71 gearbox. I believe it's OK with a 915 gearbox supplied in '72 and later. I don't remember any more details than what I wrote originally: "I had started to fit a '74 line -- the hard line that goes under the engine. Scott Clark recently faced this problem - IIRC, he had fittings made up by Chuck Moreland (Elephant Racing) and then got some hose in town. The whole thing was very spendy.

You can also get a hose with metal braid.

Yes, there is a thread by Scott, he and I have been talking about the issue.

The trouble with using -AN hose is I don't know whether the fitting will clear the heat exchanger. The hose Chuck made has very low profile fittings and may be the way to go.

FWIW nobody uses SS braid hoses anymore, most all the teams use ICORE kevlar.
