Found Rust In Gas Tank

Can't get those Webbers dialed correctly with rust in gas tank. The car had been setting for 10 years. It's a large capacity gas tank. Any ideas for cleaning the inside?? Thanks

most radiator shops will restore i for around $100-150 depending on how much sealent is needed. they will normally boil it out and then use acic to etch the metal for the gas tank liner to stick to. depending on the size and if it has baffles will determine the amount of sealer needed. por15 makes several products for this also....

I steam cleaned the tank on my '67 and never had another problem afterwards. I bought a POR15 kit, and never ended up using it.

Great guys I'am on it tomorrow. Have a webber rebuilt coming in soon but have to get the tank clean.

Rusty Gas Tanks, my specialty!!!!

Find my latest thread, "Seeking the Greatest Minds on the Planet for this 73.5T issue", and you will see what mess I got myself in by taking my old rusty tank and refurbishing it.

For the money, I would drop the $295 and buy the reproduction tank offered at Performance Parts (in California) and forego any shop or home refurbishment. Its about half the price of what you'll pay overall for a shop to do it or the POR15 kits, exterior Wurth finishes and stress!!!!!

Unfortunately, few parts houses offer a repro tank, and no one but the P-dealer provides a new CIS (1973.5T) replacement for less than $900. The repro tanks Performance sells are for pre-1973.5T and perfect for your needs.

Rust will kill everything in your fuel system if you do not arrest it properly and your tank looks like its ready for a replacement.
Mine will be a charming planter on the deck this fall!!!!

I think it was about $400. They cut the tank open, blast cleaned and coating the inside, welded it back together and blast cleaned and coated the outside. The coating was heavier than the Porsche coating so it didn't look stock but it looked very good.

I have a clean used tank out of my California '73T (installed a fuel cell), it ran with CIS, Motronic and MFI. Located in SW CT (best to pick it up).

Do a search for some of my posts with "rust" as a key word. I had my tank professionally refurbished and the rust still came back. I ended up getting a used one with a fuel pump for $200

The rust took out most of the components on my fuel system. I'd suggest doing it right, get rid of that thing.

I went the repro route. Expect a waiting period (4 mo.s) I have no complaints. It comes bare metal and I'd say it's lighter overall than the original. The metal and fittings aren't as beefy. For safety I guess none of these options, other than an expensive fuel cell, are great.

Thanks again guys for great imput. I need to do all I can to save this tank. It's a Porsche large capacity gas tank. These are very rare to find these days. These tanks were a rare option on 67 S car. It's basically unobtainable these day. It holds 3 more gallons than other tanks. The draw backs is that you need to carry a smaller spare tire.

hey, i used this radiator shop off of salvio in concord. they were a tiny bit more money. but all the hot rod guys raved about them. for $175, i had it cleaned and sealed. it took longer because the technician wanted it perfect, and kept repeating the cleaning procedure until he was happy with the product. i cannot remember the name of the shop, wait. lemme check my reciepts.....

damn cant find it. if you want to try it, i can drive by and get you a name. lemme know. btw, my tank was as bad as yours. 14 years!
