thread pitch for M10 cv joint bolts

What is the correct thread pitch for M10 bolts used on cv joints for an '87 Carrera?

I'd have to look it up. So you know, I believe M10 designation refers to thread pitch and bolt diameter.

I think the 10 in M10 refers to the nominal size of the hole into which the bolt fits.

I disagree and looked it up. M10 refers to a bolt of given diameter and specific thread pitch. M10 bolts have 1.5mm thread pitch and outer diameter of 10mm (I don't know exactly where 10mm is measured, but believe it is measure on the outer diameter of the threads themselves). Now I cannot be 100% sure that your application is M10, however ;-)

Well, McMaster-Carr lists M10 as "thread size", and lists M10 bolts with a "thread pitch" of 1.25 and 1.5. I simply want to make sure I order the correct thread pitch. I'm sure that my application uses M10 bolts.

10mm is measured over the OD of the thds. The 1.25 or 1.5mm is the thd pitch. Go to Sears/Snapon/Matco and pick up a thd pitch gage. They have them for std and metric thds.

Tut ,

You may want to see if your CV bolts take an 8 mm Allen drive bit before assuming that you have M10 bolts ... Bentley has many, many, MANY errors in the manual, and the factory spec book has listing for both M8 (3.2 Carrera) and Turbo & Turbo-look M10 bolts.

It would behoove you to determine personally what you have on your car!!!

M10 coarse is 1.5mm pitch,

see here http://www.newmantools.com/tech/threadm.htm

The only non standard (i.e. not coarse) threads I've found on the suspension /drive is the caliper bolts and some on the spring plate which are M12 x 1.5mm.

Hope it helps.

Warren,

I'll check my spec book and PET this evening, but everything that I've read on this forum regarding my car says M10s. Our host lists the correct bolt as M10 x 50mm. But I'll check it out. Thanks for your input.

I'm not sure what the pitch is, but I'm pretty sure it's the standard M10 pitch. I've bought these for my car from a local fastener supply and I didn't give the pitch.

Randy,

I've been following that thread for weeks. Thanks.

Grady told me that the correct thread pitch is 1.5mm.

Warren, my tech spec book confirms M10.

Regards.

The Carrera CV's went from using 8mm bolts to 10mm bolts part way through '85.

PET says M10x50, doesn't specify the pitch, so I'd use 1.5's.

Sometimes PET is very specific, for example, with regard to the banana arm bolts, which are listed as M14x1,5x80. McMaster often lists more than one pitch for a particular size.

Also, the later Porsche factory bolts were hex, not XZN (triple-square).
