Ques. For Javadog

Hi JR, Sorry to keep bothering you. I was gone for 4 days, got home last night and took the car out for a drive (89 Carrera) the oil temp got up to the 2nd white hash mark and stayed there but the fan never came on. Tonight I drove it and then let it idle and it got up inbetween the 2nd and 3rd white hash marks and the fan still not come on. This is the later model replacement switch from Pelican and they say it will come on at around 110 F instead of 240F like the stock switch. Problem is I don't know what the temp is from looking at just the hash marks without numbers. Do you have any idea what the temp would be at the 2nd and 3rd white hash marks? This would give me an idea. Maybe it hasn't heated up enough to where it comes on. Thanks again! Murf

Here's a poor man's pyrometer. You can old onto oil pipes that are 110. You can't hold pipes that are 200 for very long without starting to cook.

Why are you calling me Javadog?

Murf;

They probably meant 110C, not 110F, with regards to the switch. 110F would be too cold, the fan would run virtually all the time. 110C works out to 230F.

There should be some calibration markings on the very left side of the guage. You'll nee a flashlight to see them and you'll need to look obliquely at the gauge from the right. They are very small and the gauge bezel normally obscures them from view when looking straight at the gauge. Usually the first mark will be 60C, then 90C, 120C and the red area should start at 150C. Based on this, I'd expect the needle would have to be 2/3 of the way between the second and third marks for the switch to turn the fan on. Keep in mind that these things aren't exact, so it may be a little higher or lower than expected.
