I can only compare a 3.2 Carrera with my 964, and all I say is that I will not go back to a Carrera, SC or mid-year. If I bought an early car, it would not be for performance purposes (non hotrod).

As for handling and the "heavy feeling" comment above; we do a lot of "spirited" driving up here in the PNW and I have found that the C2 corners incredible and the feel is actually better than the Carrera.

I too think the C2/C4 is the the best all-around 911 (my personal opinion).

For details about the C2/C4, I found this site to be informative: http://members.rennlist.com/jfk964/porsche_964_faq.htm

Well a 3.2 Carrera is already a pretty heavy car by old Porsche standards. As Colin Chapman used to say add lightness. My 930 is the heaviest porsche I have ever owned not to say it isn't fast but it certainally feels heavy compared to my RSR.

I've noticed that too, and you guys are killing me. I want a 964 C2 Euro RS replica/look sooooooo bad.
But like someone said above, I don't see it as a replacement for my early car. Ideally I would have both, but getting that by the finance committee is unlikely at this point. :)

Porsche Doc 11-17-2005 07:17 AM

Well IMO Shuie take your long hood and do it up with a 3.2 or better a 3.6.
That white and red RSR I had was really fast. :D
A 964 wouldn't even think about keeping up with it. It even blew the doors of a 996 one day. ;) It was a blast to drive.
Weight is HP you know 2200 vs 3100.
Ah decisions! decisions!

Another helpful site for 964 info:
http://www.porsche964.co.uk/

I have observed a sea change in the attitude tward
964's in the last couple years. There's a strong desire
for the traditional body shape, (964 being the last model
with the classic "frog face") combined with more modern
technology. The DIY isn't as easy as earlier cars, but isn't
all that bad either.

It would be great to have both, budget allowing.

There's a good article on just this topic in the Nov issue of 911 & Porsche World. Retro yet modern conversions of SCs and 964s. They look really tight to me.

The 964 is an awesome car and after having owned one and several older 911s, I prefer the 964. Drives better, handles better, steers better, better brakes, nose does not push as bad in wet, clutch better, AC actually works, the engine is a vast improvement over the 3.2 and very easy to modify to get more hp and torque.

JBO 11-17-2005 10:50 AM

I think the time to buy a 964 is now, as the prices are depressed due to a general belief that the 964's are problematic. Many people also don't like the styling changes. The stock wheels are fugly, but that is easily changed. I did not want one when I bought my SC several years ago ( and it wasn't a price issue - I was looking for a 78-89 911), but my feelings have changed. Now the well cared for ones have had the necessary repairs/upgrades done. Since the enthusiasts are now appear to be warming to the 964, I suspect prices will increase (or hold steady).

I have owned both early car and a '91 964.

964 is a great car, very comfortable to drive, very modern driving car, great as a daily driver as well.

The earlier cars are great as well, but for daily driving the 964 will be better, the 964 got good mileage as well.

Thanks again everyone. The 964 is making more and more sense to me for my current situation.

Don, I cant wait to see this backdate that you guys are doing. I dont hate the look of the 964 at all, but it would be pretty cool to be able to go back cosmetically.

These are dry weights too - unless I am greatly mistaken, as are all the weights in the Porsche red book. A G50 Carrera dry or book weight is 1250kg but when you weigh one with some fuel (2/3 of a tank), 11 litres of oil, some washer fluid and a couple of options like sunroof and rear wiper it actually weighs 1320kg. By the same logic a realistic weight for a C2 without driver is probably 1400+kg or about 3100lbs. It is truly incredible how much weight the later Carreras and 964 put on - which is why I said it is hard to make them feel really light, like an early car.

Bill Verburg 11-18-2005 11:51 AM

a 964 /993 doesn't need to be that heavy

my '95 wet, full load of fluids, spare tool kit, rol bar etc. on corner balance scales 2698#

the difference between a properly set up light 964/993 and stock is night and day. They can be a far better than the the 2.7RS, when equipped w/ comparable comfort items. They will never be as light but they don't need to be.

RallyJon 11-18-2005 01:00 PM

Bill, I was searching through your past posts: did you ever post a definitive list of what's been done to/is not stock on your 993? Just how stripped is it?

soup dragon 11-18-2005 01:04 PM

Ive owned a 88 carrera and now have a 91 c4,and as said above i woulnt go back the 964 feels a lot more modern to drive but has the classic 911 styling (even purer in my opinion). The steering is a joy and retains all its "feel" and manouvering in tight spaces isnt a chore anymore.
There are known probs with 964`s but nothing with the exception of the dual distributors (which has now been overcome)that you dont get with older 911`s.
The picture of the "hotrodded" 964 looks more like a 3.2 in 964 clothes to me (look at the exhaust)

It's very stripped, lots of lightening where it can not be seen, behind the bumpers, exhaust, and of course the interior.

I suppose it's noiser than a stocker but the gurgling oil and other noise is music to my ears. The radio is unused as of this date.:)

The only thing I want done asap is the aero improvemants of a full RS kit and a short stack trans.

Bill Verburg 11-18-2005 01:17 PM

ps I had to pull the rear bumper to reinstall some weight in the form of heat shields, all of 285g/side:rolleyes:

plain fan 11-18-2005 03:47 PM

I love my 66, 78 and 90. The 90 is the daily driver right now and as a daily driver it doesn't get better. It is quieter than the 66 or 78 and it is a convertible. The torque is awesome and it handles very well. Today I got on the throttle from a dead stop turning into traffic. We all know what recipe is being mixed with these ingredients. No issues as I knew exactly what the car was doing through the steering and driving feel.

It has been mentioned before that they don't feel as fast as earlier cars. Well yes they are heavier but that dual mass fly wheel doesn't allow the engine to spin up as quickly as the earlier cars; to fix this get the light weight flywheel.

To lighten the car up you could pull the carpet up and remove the factory sound deadening. That stuff is unbelievably heavy and when it gets wet it just absorbs and holds the water. When putting the interior in the 78 I went with an OEM heat/sound product used by new car makers. It weighs less and performs better than the stock stuff.

All of this being said, I wonder what the 3.6 would be like in my 78 or even an earlier car... :D Maybe later I'll decide to find out, but for now the 964 is an awesome daily driver.

efhughes3 11-18-2005 04:17 PM

Don't forget you can buy a blower off the shelf for a 964.:D
