Can valve seals be replaced w/o pulling engine?

I wondered if its possible to replace worn valve seals without pulling the engine? How difficult is it considering working space and access, and how long does it take? I've done this on a Chevy V8, very easy, just charge the cylinders with air pressure, and remove the rocker and springs, and replace the seal, reset the valve lash clearence and that was it.

What you're asking about can be done the same way as you described on a 911. Technically, it can be done in the car, but you'd be crazy to do it in the car because it is much easier to pull the engine and do it, including the work pulling the engine.

But yes, if you have worn valve guides or valve stems this would be a "band aid" fix and probably not last long at all. I have not heard of seal problems as long as they were installed properly, normally the real problem is guide wear.

Assuming the valve guides are still in good shape, you can remove the in/ex valve springs on the car using special tools (Sir Tools) for this task. Admittedly, there's better access with the engine out, but after removing the springs, retainers and locks, you can remove and replace the valve guide seals.

I wouldn't want to try this with the engine in the car. I'll bet I can remove an engine, change its seals and replace the engine more quickly than I can replace the seals with the engine in place. These engines are a snap to remove.

Why do you think all you need is new seals, and not new guides?
