Can 911 be run without Heat Exchanger?

Hello,

I have a 1984 911 coupe. It has a small leak on both sides of the engine and is leaking on the heat exchangers and smoking when the car is stopped. Is it possible to remove the heat exchangers so the leak just drips on the ground and not the H. E.??

The car is not driven in the winter so I'm not to concerned about having heat. I will add the exchangers back on once the leaks are repaired. Thanks for your help.

David

Have you ever heard an old Briggs & Stratton mower engine with a rotted-out muffler? Imagine that times six ... in sync, but much, MUCH LOUDER. Not likely to get past even a single local patrol car without a citation!!!

Maybe I should have stated that I would bypass the exchangers with a streight pipe. I just want to avoid the drips of oil hitting the exchanger and smoking.

You can use a header but there is not a lot of free space down there so I think the oil will find its way onto the primary tubes.

Best regards,
Gerry

Thanks, do you mean replacing the exchangers with a straight thru pipe?

recap........

Ashi, you might not have noticed that the heat exchanger is actually a header with a shrouding around it to capture the warm air.
If you remove the HE and replace it, you will be replacing it with headers........in the same general location.

Fix the leak

I did it on my 70T, In FL heat was not needed. Remove the headers and us a sawsall to cut away the heat exchanger, it's takes ahile to do. When you done you will have a copy of the Bursch header.

I plan on fixing the lead in the next 12 to 18 months. By that time the clutch will need done so I want to do it all at one time. The leak is not critical, just a smelly pain at this point and I dont want to have to pull the motor twice in 18 months.

I dont really want the heaters because I dont drive the car in winter months.

it might be just the lower valve covers leaking... check them and change the gaskets or check the torgue on the nuts.

Before you take a saw to your pipes, make sure those little oil feed lines with Banjo connectors are not leaking.
