911 fuel injection

I own a 944 but am looking at a 911 in california. it is a 1981, alpine white, 5 speed. the owner says it has one bad cylinder, a valve or piston ring or something. my question is what type of fuel injection is on it. is it electric, manual, carborated or what. Forgive me if I seem kind of stupid but I am new to these cars. also is there any thing particular I should watch for on this model - year of car.

Welcome to the 911 Forum.

An ‘81SC is a great car. Be sure and do your homework and find the best example. The 3.0 engine has CIS which works great, is relatively expensive to repair, is fairly reliable and isn’t known for high performance. All in all it is a wonderful street 911.

The engine has a couple of old-age issues you should be aware of: cylinder head studs can snap (usually from minute corrosion) and there was less-than-perfect sets of valve springs in that era. The OE rubber center clutch disc is prone to the center failing in old age. Depending on how it has been driven, the 915 transmission might need attention. Don’t let any of this dissuade you, it is a great 911.

The key is a very through PPI by someone who knows these cars.

Where in California is the car? We can help you find a good shop to do the PPI. You might be able to prevail on some knowledgeable Pelicans to look and advise you.

Best,
Grady

it is at westside motorsports in venice, ca. I think there asking $8,900. my brother in law only works a few minutes from there, I might have him give it a quick look over to decide if I should dive any deeper into it.

Nothing, different name for the same thing.

A running decent 3.0 can be had for 3-5K. $8900 is about 1-2K too high for an SC needing a motor.

yeah I thought it sounded kind of high too. for $8,900 plus parts I could find a good decent one for a little more. But it has to be white, to me nothing looks better than an alpine white 911. I don't want anything older than 1980, but I don't want to spend much more than $12,000, and it has to be a coupe. plus I live in south dakota so I have to look a ways away to find what I want.

These guys do not have the best reputation. I do not think they will let you take it off the lot for an inspection. I'd look for a car from a private party, perhaps even for sale here on the Pelican classifieds. That price is a few K too high needing motor work.
