Recaro PP or GT3?

I am trying to reduce the weight of my seats.

I have some Recaro SRD's - great seats but pretty heavy by "trying to extract the last bits of weight" out of my car standards. 35lbs it seems. I am under the impression that shells are around half of this give or take?

The other part of the equation is that with fixed, non-bending seats I need a roll bar so then maybe the weight trade off is a wash.

The question about GT3 or PP comes from they are roughly the same price. I saw a set of new GT3's for $1295 and the PP in leather is roughly the same. This is for an 84 Carrera and I assume I am into about $100 per seat for brackets?

Anybody have exact weights of these seats...yes I searched.

Thanks

-Jeff

According to a post I found by Jack Olsen, pole positions weigh about 15 pounds. I have heard of racing shells weighing down to 8 or 9 pounds in carbon fiber, maybe even less, but those may not be as convenient for street use as the GT3 or PP.

I don't really believe that you need a roll bar just because you switch from SRDs to PPs. Safety is a spectrum.

Sparco Sprint........holds ya in better than the seats you mentioned.
Give em a try, esp if you are not thin.

A true bargain.

The GT3 and PP are exaclty the same seat up until the shoulder. I doubt there is a significant difference in weight.

The GT3 are resally wide though around the head... I would measure them to make sure you can fit 2 side by side in an early 911.

The GT3 seat looks weird, to me -- like the face of an alien. But that's just me, and it's just an appearance thing. They're very similar seats, as far as I can tell.

I thought Recaro was offering the SPG PP with leather now for around $700. Am I wrong about this?

All good and valid points -

I would fall more into the narrow side of the house at 160 - 5'10

I agree on sitting in them. So it looks like(without spending silly carbon fiber money on shells) that I am saving roughly 30lbs for two seats. That is fairly significant savings. I took the SRD's out to lay an RS carpet kit in and found them to be pretty heavy...I am at the extreme end of saving weight - no fiberglass panels and do not plan on it. So any little bit helps in the interior.

Rollbar - The SRD's would/could fold flat (at least that is the theory, although in practice still sounds painful to me) Where as the shells do not. I am sure everyone has thoughts on this but for a shell type seat this is how I would roll...no pun intended.

I mean having a rollbar around your head also in a rear end collison is not exactly safe either for limited street use.

Matteo-

This wasn't my experience. I use a cloth PP and my 38" waist fits well in that seat. The GT3 seat in leather I tried was painfully tight. Maybe the GT3 has the same dimensions as the SPG?

Should be fine for your size, though Jeff.

You need to try em on. It has a lot to do with fit, I was lucky and Northstar motorsports has literally dozens on display for trying out. I found the PP in cloth works best for me.

Todd - I think you're right. I always heard the PP's were wider in the seat compared to GT3's...

You aren't talking $1295/pair are you? If so, please tell me where you can get that price. Thanks.

Not leather. Leather is still around $1,100. You can get a high quality vinyl and faux suede insert for $900. Leather was $1,495 and vinyl was $795 just six months ago.

Jeff,
If this is a track car I would recommend not getting leather. You slide around on leather seats. Cloth holds you in place much better. But leather looks sooooooo good

I have one of my PP seats sitting in the basement now. I'll weigh it tonight. 15lbs sounds high to me for just the seat.

I have the leather PP's. If I was REALLY skinny I might slide ever so slightly, but these are not wide seats. I'm 5-11, 215 and they are comfortable but quite snug.

I just weighed one with the sliders and aluminum brackets on, and the result is......25 lbs. The brackets and sliders are probably 7-8 lbs.

Cobra Misanos are relatively light weight, while still providing the flexilbility of a tilting and adjustable seat back. I like mine very much.

I am basically the same size as you - 5'9", 155lbs and 32 inch waist and I find the PPs very comfortable. I can fit in the SPGs OK (much narrower) but I think they may be tough on a long trip. Although the PPs are wider, I have never noticed any sliding in the seat on track, but I have cloth not leather. If you ever want to take larger passengers, or women who are naturally a little wider in the hips, then the PPs are a more versatile option. Still, you need to sit in them and see what you think.

Chuck - Did you find the Misanos gave you more or less headroom compared to the stock seats - they look beautiful!

I concur on the alien deal - reminds me more of cobra that is ready to strike - anyway if you know of PP seats in leather for that price please point me to the source - I found them for $1400 but no cheaper.

I have a call into PAR in New York but they have not called me back. That is where I got a good price on my SRD's

GrantG,

I'm not tall-5'8", so may not be as sensitive to headroom as others.

I may have ended up slightly higher, but I might be imagining that. Feels pretty much the same, though I'm certainly not lower-which I don't mind at all.

The mounting brackets sold with the seats came from Wedge engineering. The height of the seat is determined by these brackets. To adjust the height, you have to cut the bracket. I cut my to its lowest setting. Once cut, you can't go back-it's a one way seat adjustment down.

They felt tight on my lats initially-I was lucky in that I had the opportunity to sit in them before buying-and that was my only concern. I quickly became accustomed to the support and now I'm so used to them, I hate the seats in other cars.

They are very light.
