Shifting Issues

Just bought a 1988 G50 car that feels more difficult to shift than I recall my 1983 SC being. I'm not familiar with these but here are some symptoms/answers that may lead to your best advice:

No clutch free travel before it engages

Feels "notchy" shifting as if all synchros are not spinning up the next gear as I upshift

If I put it in gear, then start the car, RPMs are not lessened so I think the clutch is working properly

Was particularly bad first thing this morning when transmission was cold, could it also be a funtion of the number of cycles or pumps of the clutch pedal as shifting got easier?

Car has 104,000 miles on it

Secondary question: How much horsepower should a 1988 Carrerra US model be making at the flywheel and wheels? PPI included a chassis dyno which derived approx 219 hp at the flywheel. Mechanic said that was fine but I thought it should be 231. Leakdown was less than 2% on all cycinders.

it could be the gear lube. change it out with redline synthetic and see how it works before you do anything drastic

Problem Fixed! Put in the Redline Hypoid and works like a charm.

Best part was taking it to a friend's house to use his lift and seeing the cars he's been collecting. Dear God!

In one Building he has:
1931 Cadillac Phaeton, 100pt. car I suspect
1932 Auburn Boattail Speedster, another ringer
1957 Corvette Conv. 457 "Fuely" (sp?)
1961 Corvette Conv., not 100 pts. but 99.7 (highest possible)
1973 Triumph TR6 with 26K miles, looks brand new, completely original Nad he bought it for $5,000 about 2 years ago
Three Messherschmidt (sp?) cars (3 and 4 wheel models) one just got invited to Amelia Island Concourse
BMW Isetta
Model A Pickup
1914 Garford
Jaguar XJS
3-4 Motorcylces (Mustang, Triumph, etc.)

In the yard he has a hulk of a rusty XKE he bought for 2 grand recently. He's got a stack of old Jag sedans.

What a great place to piss the old lube out...AWESOME. Right off a dirt road in the middle of nowhere..

I have an '87 G50. Right now, I cannot shift it into any gear, but 3rd. This is with the car off and when it is turned on. I press in the clutch, then try to put it into reverse. It won't go, but with the clutch fully depressed and with me applying pressure towards putting it into reverse, it will not go, but the car moves ever so slightly to the rear. I try to press it into 1st and cannot, but when I hold in the clutch, and press the shift lever towards 1st, I see the car start to creep forward. It worked great the whole previous week.

This happened once before and after sitting for a week, I went out to try and get it to the shop and it worked perfectly. Mechanic kept it for 2 weeks just looking at it messing with it and trying it everyday, but it never messed up again until now.

Any ideas?

Hydraulic clutch, right. Could be the clutch master cylinder is leaking internally. I've never heard of one being intermittent like yours, but maybe the seal is damaged causing a leak, and then periodically reseats itself.

If this is the problem, the master cylinder will likely be leaking a little fluid past the dust seal on the actuator side. I don't know where the master cylinder is located on the 911, but if it was an MGB it would soon be dripping on your left foot.

I experienced difficult shifting couple of months ago. Thought it was the clutch master cyl or slave cyl, what it turned out to be was a broken roll pin that attaches the clutch pedal to the shaft. That was good, very easy fix and cheap to.

Euro Carrera @ 231- yours and mine (blk 88 coupe) come in at listed 217- so, 219 is right on. if you want 231+ try ssi's- you can put in a Steve Wong Chip with it for a bit more and great low end throttle response but i don't want to get into more chip talk- really. Glad the change helped smooth out the shifting!

What weight Redline hypoid did you use? I have an '87 G50.
