MB 911 stinger tips for SSI: WOW!

'Just finished coming back from a drive with Ben's new shorty stinger mufflers on the end of my SSI's.
When I first saw these things, I was sure they would be WAY to loud, but much to my amazement the tone was not that loud. When the car intially fires up, it does so with some serious authority, as the revs come down it settles into a muffled gurgle; blip the throttle and the hair on the back of your neck stands up.
Performance wise, the 4000-redline comes much quicker (bounced off the rev limiter a couple of times before getting used to the feel), the engine just wants to scream past the 6700 mark without any sign of strain. Originally I had Ben's version 1 dual in single out; with that set-up you knew redline was coming.
SW sent me a custom chip that gave me a 12.8-13.1 afr across the RPM range; considering these mufflers have absolutely no restriction, I decided to set the FQS to position 1, giving me @ 3% more fuel across the board. I'll be doing the LM1 AFR readings in a few days to make sure I'm still in the same range as Steve originally set.
Crusing under 3500 with mild throttle opening you can get away with driving through town without much fanfare; nail it, and people take notice.
Throttle response is virtually instantaneous; a total blast.
Here are a few pics of them on my 3.2

Ps. The ugly orange AeroDuct hose connects my right and left boxes for heat, that soon wil be removed.

Very interesting. This would be interesting on my 3.6! How is the pricing?

Ben, how about making something like this for the 993 manifolds with a small cat and muffler like this? One side goes to the other side outlet under the bumper and vice versa?

I bet these are good for 4-5hp but I'd be concerned that low end torque would suffer. On a dyno I saw 6hp difference between dual in/single out on SSIs vs a pair of glasspacks (I think they were Thrush) on headers. Max torque was 2 ft/lbs less. Not sure how much was attributable to the headers being 1 3/4 ID and SSIs being 1 5/8" but for the street Ben's 2 in 1 out would likely be a better choice. Just my $0.02

Those might be just the ticket (or maybe something similiar) for my dynomax tips - it's a little noisy for my tastes

Gee Ben, I wonder why your construction technique looks so familiar. Replace the flange with a swivel joint and that baby would bolt right onto my Piper! Those are pretty cool! I cant believe that those are not too loud though. I think I am going to have to find a set of SSI's now to find out.

How can those NOT be louder than hell? Surely they are louder than a factory sport muffler. Are they louder than the RSR type stinger muffler?

maybe nasty in a good way, or maybe just too damn loud for the street. I love the sound of a flat 6 whaling away. I found the factory sport muffler almost too loud on my street car though..

Possibly, but it depends on the comparison. I did a dyno test of supertrapp knockoffs versus magnaflo x-flo on my 3.2 and found the hp and torque to be nearly identical. No chip and I got my best A/F at the stock setting. Surprisingly both were 5-6 hp and 8-9 ft/lbs better than some other very popular performance mufflers I tested.

I like loud for a tracked car and the weight savings of the shorty has to be substantial. For grins I weighed some mufflers - including all mounting hardware factory came in around 30#, magnaflo at 22#, Bursch at 15# and supertrapp at 9#.

Brad:
You dealt a cold blow with the Civic application; right to the heart. I came across a few ricer car cars with the standard issue coffee can muffler and found the tone to be about equal. After the encounter I wondered if I was in the same category.
Today reality hit me when a MB SLK 3.2 AMG tried to pull me and as I passed him, I sure was making quite a racket considering I wasn't flying by him. Making this much noise, the car better be flying; something my car wasn't. The sound is really great on full wail, but I need to going way faster to justify the sound.
I think guys with 427 Cobra's have the right to run loud side pipes, as well as high HP 930's with straight pipes out of the turbos; these guys can justify their bellow.
This was my last attempt to wring out the last bit of HP out of my pretty stock 3.2.
Weight wise, these units weigh @ 3lbs. combined.
I noticed one side was darker at the tip, I need to take AFR readings from both sides to see what's going on.
Cheers,
j.p.
