It has been done and seems to work. But it is a pretty small area to weld without interfering with the friction surface. I think the loctite or JB weld methods are easier.

If you do weld, you still need the shims.

I mig'd mine after shimming it-it took some care, and just a couple small welds. Fine after 5k. You do need to be very careful an use low heat.
