New to me Carerra! Tell me about mods...

I am picking up my new used 1984 Carerra tomorrow and have a few questions about getting some more power from it. It's all stock and has 140k on it.

Can the exhaust be backdated? Are there chips? I would like to keep a cat, can this be done and still improve exhaust flow? Without opening the motor what are some other ways to get a few more HP's?

Thanks

Alex

Buy a Steve Wong chip through Pelican!!!

Post pics when you get it. Congrats is it a coupe, cab or Targa?

Steve Wong gave me a great tip, make sure that when you step on the gas the fuel injection opens completely, mine only opened about 80% easy cable adjustment.

There are a few methods you can use to improve horsepower and drive-ability but most of these will have an effect on your car's ability to pass emissions test here in California.

With that said, you might consider replacing the chip for a performance version. Steve Wong sells them and many, many people seem very happy with his product and service. You could replace the heat exchangers with SSI's (expensive - like $800 for the set). You could replace the cat with a Euro pre-muffler. You could replace the muffler for a free flowing version. You could also go with a Mass Airflow Sensor which would be super expensive and difficult to set up for your car, I hear. But when they are set up right I hear the horsepower increase is pretty good.

All of these things will only give you maybe 20 to 25 more horsepower from what I understand. For more you'll need to open it up and start replacing pistons, cams, going with a twin-plug setup, etc.

Good luck. Post pics of the car when you get it. We are all waiting to see it. I'm guessing its that black sunroof coupe you asked about? If it is, it sure looks like a beaut!

Can you elaborate on this? Thanks!

I think the best bang for the buck is a cat bypass pipe. In CA it can be easily changed with the cat for smog check. Not tons of HP though. Around 8ish HP.
A Steve Wong chip will help. Mass Air Flow Sensor for spendy HP. Here are some dyno sheets and engine configs for my 3.2.

More kudos for Steve W and dyno sheets

Welcome to the world of expensive Porsche HP for minimal gains.

Unless you do some serious engine work (big $$$$), don't expect too much gains/miracles

THanks guys. It is the Black coupe I was asking about. I'll try the chip first and see how much more power I want. SSI's deem like a good idea but are a bit on the $ side.

On other fronts. Are there stock looking fiberglass bumpers made for that car??

Floor the loud pedal and have a friend check how open the fuel injection is open. Tighten up the accelerator cable until its wide open underneath the car. Sorry but too late to elaborate other than its easy to do.

Gotacha! Will do, but I need to find someone that can run that fast!

Happy turkey day!

Alex Congrats on your "new" car. I know hp is what everyone wants and craves but I think the best place to start is the driver. No i'm not being a smart a@#.
(First and foremost take care of the safety stuff, Brakes, seat belts, steering.)
Start with the driver seat and work your way around the interior. Is the steering wheel comfortable, seat comfortable, nice sounding stereo, carpet looking good, stuff like that. After all you'll be driving your car and have to look at the interior as well as use the controls around you.
With that being said, drive your car and get the feel and you'll start to find out what can make your driving experience enjoyable.
Jesse
Happy Thanksgiving!

The most effective mod that you can do is to make it lighter

I'm pretty sure Alex (avendlerdp) is an experienced Porsche driver. He's made 405 posts on this board. I believe he has a 1970 911T already so I'm assuming this is a second Porsche for him.

Lucky guy!

If the shocks/struts are still original, throw some Bilstein Sports on there! It will feel like a completely different car. Of course it won't make it faster, however, you will now be able to take your favorite freeway onramp 25 mph faster! Ask me how I know
