What year did H4 headlights become standard?

Does anyone know what year H4 headlights became standard on 911s?

Too many people on this board have upgraded/changed their headlights to H4s to tell but I think it happened sometime in the 1980s, right?

Certainly "never" for USA cars..... The separately - aimable H1's were first...I think as far back as 60's or 70's...

I think Euro cars as early as the 70's had H4's....

Thanks Wil!

I guess that's why they sometimes call them euro H4s.

Like Will said H4 were never standard in the US

Somewhere in the Carrera run they started using H5 which sorta looks like an H4

I believe the totally inadequate H5's came around 87. My 85 and some 86's I've seen have the "sugar-scoop" trim rings with the flattish, semi-domed US style sealed-beam headlights...

The H5's on the USA 87's were optically inferior to the H4's...the H5's also had the US-mandated aiming "teets" that allowed you to attach the aiming mechanism that service garages used. H4's never had that.

I think H4s were and are illegal on the US roads. H5s were DOT approved.

I agree, H5s showed up on 87s. I never actually drove an H5 car at night so I don't know about the performance first hand but I have also heard they are not as efficient as an H4.
