Final word on steering rack cover - Need - Don't Need??

84 Carrera - have done some searching with regard to the rack cover being structural or not. Was wanting to ditch if not or if other mods are needed.

I think Thom was making a fiberglass part and some mentioned that is was structural and it saw some loading and others said it did not.

Yes I have it bad.

Thoughts?

-Jeff

Jeff, I run without it. I have an AL crossmember in my 73E and it has the support struts to tie to the body. I don't know about the loading, but I'm inclined to think it's to keep debris away from the brake master cylinder and the steering rack.

I thought about this too. Mine seems to have done more bad than good in that it has the nack for holding mud and water and has caused the sway bar to rust where crosses inside of the rack cover. Might concider drilling some holes in it when, if ever, I get the car back on the road. Plus the thing is heavy.

Yeah it is really heavy - is the 73 setup much different than the Carrera structure?

The early one is lighter from what I've heard. But, I don't think it'll fit on cars equipped with the AL crossmember.

I was advised by Auto Associates that I did not need it.

I don't have mine on. It needs to go on, I think. One reason is when I went off the track at 50 MPH a while back, I bent my AL cross member. Whatever hooked it might have only messed up the cover if I had it on.

I don't see any structural basis for the thing. Only four bolts. That cant provide much shear, a little maybe. As I said, I thing it's for protection, mainly.

Oh, and I guess one ought to look in there once in a while for mud, etc. But that wouldn't be any different that looking forward in your rear wheel wells and seeing what accumulates there.

If you have a fuel pump near the gas tank, I think it'd be stupid to run without it.

It's also an aerodynamic benefit to keep it. It does provide a small amount of shear, which benefits front stiffness. Nothing to lose sleep over, I'm sure. But the aero and safety aspects outweigh the the weight penalty by far. It's also the last place you want to save weight.

Through '76 the m/c and lines would be very vulnerable, post, as Tyson mentioned has the fuel pump and lines.

the higher the car sits the more air flows past it, the more it is an aero aid and the more you need to lower or add a diffuser.

Porsche(and other manufacturers) go way out of their way to have a smooth/flat bottom on their cars.

Someone - Thom? - was making these out of CF or FG -- but I don't see that the wt. advantage outweighs the ability to stop rocks -- ever seen an old cover? I had mine powdercoated just to give a bit more "rockability"

What rally stage you driving on? Rocks, mud, water - that is stuff for daily drivers that are trail rated The streets here in VA are clear of such fodder.

no rally stage -- that is what happens on Oregon hwys - maybe it is the grit they put down for snow, but I rarely drive the 911 on roads within a month of the time it could have snow on it.

I ran over a piece of crap on the high way and tore my master cylinder right off!! Would not have happened if I had my cover on. Maybe leave off for a track only car?

When I purchased mine, it was missing the cover. I spoke to my mechanic (he's worked on 911s for 25 years and seen just about everything) and he strongly recommended I get one for debris protection. Aerodynamics was a distant secondary consideration. As far as being a 'chasis stiffener', it never came up. I decided to take the weight penalty. Since then I added a front panel of light-weight tin from the diffuser back to the panel to clean up airflow. Now the bottom of the car is flat from diffuser back to the engine/tranny.
