The IF2 thread

I'm helping a guy I met trough internet with his show/track/drag car so I tought it would be fun to put few pics on PP as well.

Car it's called "It's Fun2" after original "It's fun" (which was highly tuned Ford Sierra Cosworth), quite famous in Sweden during 90's). IF2 is built on 78' 930 that was converted to race early in it's carrier and raced for many years. Car was almost stock (and quite worn) when purchased. It went trough extensive modifications to become one of Sweden's most versatile street cars.

It started it's life like this:

Went trough lot's of work...
http://www.itsfun.nu/itsfun2/itsfun2_44.jpg

...and started to look like this (It's FIAT coupe lights in front):
http://www.itsfun.nu/itsfun2/itsfun2_62.jpg

To finally morph into this:

Here are some engine pics. Original 3.6 engine like one Pelicanites like to install in their early cars:
http://www.itsfun.nu/itsfun2/itsfun2_65.jpg

...but it recieved twin turbochargers and other goodies:

Car run on various events for two years but it was quite unreliable so far. It run high 10's on drag strip (while breaking couple 930 halfshafts) and posted rather respectable time on Nurburgring but never run well for longer period of time.

This year, we are doing a final attempt to rectify the problems. Chassis is going trough final rebuild with flip front and engine is out for R&R. If everything is going well, we're off to Nurburgring early in may, to attend Scuderia Hanseat course andd hopefully get some good times around the track.

At this point, chassis is being rebuilt by shop that is something of Swedens version of "Monster Garage". While somewhat "bling"-oriented (hehe), they are impressingly skillfull when it comes to custom body work and quite fun to work with. There are no gray-haired old guys protecting sacred P-car values. If something is to be implemented, it's Sawz-all and angle-grinder time.

Car will get 993-lookalike rear light ramp. Original GT2 decklid is cut (we couldn't make air-vents work) and it's custom CF wing moved upwards/backwards (after consultations with aerodynamic expert). There are also side-scoops to get air into turbochargers and cooling scoop for rear brakes.

We'll be tearing into engine next weekend so it would be good to toss around ideas and questions here. Engine had OEM 3.6TT pistons fitted but I'm afraid we'll find them toast once we lift of the heads.

This is a buildsheet before latest overhaul:
- 930 body, custom cage, custom front
- 935 uniball plates, Ohlins coilovers in the back
- 930 brakes, scoops in front
- 3.6 N/A engine, custom rods, 3.6TT pistons, hotter than GT EVO cams, twin Garret GT35BB's, big intercooler, twin throttle bodies, 996 GT3 oil pump, twin 930 scavenge pumps.
- G50/52 gearbox, custom PowerhausII gears and Quaife differential (clutch diff was tried but couldn't stand the torque).

This is being done right now:
- Big oil cooler + thermostat in front (car was running small OEM cooler + extra cooler in series and no termostat  )
- Rear wing moved back and up (to make it more efficient)
- front body completly redone to carbon-fibre 935-lookalike flip-front. 996 Xenon front lights to be used.
- Custom 993-looking rear skirt with 993 light-ramp.
- A version of BB2 venturi tunnel (that Jack Olsson experimented with) if we find place to fit it.
- Total overhaul of the engine to cure multiple problems (oil-pressure was never stable but climbed with revs, lot's of blow-by, various leaks, knocking noise etc.)

I'm looking forward some help from Pelicanites when it comes to engine. Right now, we are thinking about replacing OEM 3.6 N/A fan for 3.6TT straigh-bladed fan as it should flow more air. We are unsure if it fits though.

Wow

For those interested in technical details, here are some pics:

New non-equal length headers (they lowered boost treshold by almost 500 RPM compared to old ones which were of similar design but sloppier made):

Old headers:

Garrett GT30BB:

Custom halfshafts made from hi-tensile spring steel. They can twist 1½ times before snapping off:

That is a SERIOUS machine! I can't offer suggestions on the engine, but I can offer luck and thank you for sharing!

WOW -

Maybe post something to the engine building forum for comment from some experts. I bet Henry Schmidt, Steve Weiner and others would add some good commentary.

Thats a serious machine. I've seen some of the videos from Nurburgring and various Swedish events. Awsome stuff.

You're not backing away from a challenge Goran..... From your posts here at Pelican, it seems that you have extensive turbo experience

beepbeep 12-05-2005 10:42 AM

Arnljot: my contribution to project is relativly small. I just fix some parts and have influental opinions about how to solve certain technical problems.

(edit) It just become much bigger, I worked two weekends straight trying to put it together :) )

Now, I have a reason to believe that pistons might be damaged. OEM 993TT pistons were OK but they are heavy and needed pockets to be cut in order not to interfere with valves.

I wonder where I can find a set of forged 3.6 turbo pistons on short notice? JE's with 8.0:1 C/R would be perfect.

Awesome...can you post links to the video(s)?

How are you fabbing the custom body panels? Is the gray stuff some sort of foam or some other material?

Oh Haha 12-05-2005 04:09 PM

WOW!!
Sweet video #1.
The only criticism I have is that the music is too loud. I would much rather hear the car.

Love the footwell camera shot on the 'Ring.

(Why do "producers" feel the need to have the songs overshadow the real subject of the video?)

It's foam that's hardens and is used to make moulds for carbon-fibre panels.

Woah...that's sexy. I've never heard of it. May I ask where I can get some of this magic foam???? I could be downright dangerous with that stuff!

PorscheGuy79 12-06-2005 08:05 AM

Goran, WHAT A CAR! Its a little flashy for most of the taste here on Pelican but I think its one hell of a cool car.

Foam is called "bonocell". It's specific weight is very low.

Here are more pics of rear wing remake (we spoke with expert in aerodynamic and he suggested moving rear wing backwards and upwards):

Next time, move car to the left about 1 foot (30 cm) before taking this picture... THANKS!

(AWSOME car and project!!!!)
