By the beard of Zeus!
You guys are nuts over there. That is an unbelievable set up. |
OEM generator is a heavy b****rd and rubber belt that was powering fan and generator had hard time coping with torque whenever throttle was blipped and very heavy OEM rotor had to be spinned to speeds reaching 18000 RPM at highest engine revs. (we have 2> gearing on fan belt).
It's going to be replaced by much smaller one powered by geared down separate belt pulley with smaller diameter. That should make fan-belt last much longer than before. http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/008.jpg Front brakes which were OEM 930 brakes are finally being replaced for Big Red items. They were actually quite good but when opportunity to swap them appeared we couldn't pass it. Big Reds mean higher unsprung weight but also a bigger margins when it comes to repeated braking. http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/009.jpg |
Minor changes occured today. We had hard times packing everything into engine compartment so it was decided to chop of rear and replace it with a flip-front and tube chassis.
Mounting and dismounting engineand access to plumbing/spark plugs etc. was hard. This way we should be able to lift the rear skirt and have everything easily accessible. http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/001.jpg Tokan does what he does best: cutting cars. (I always dreamed about doing this on a 356 :D :D ) http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/018.jpg http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/022.jpg http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/024.jpg http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/033.jpg |
Of course, that makes it somewhat hard to mount the engine the usual way but it was solved by fabricating new engine mount that was sandwiched between engine and gearbox. That way whole engine will hang from the back and everything is easily accessible. I think somebody did this before on 935 or something like that.
We also considered flipping the G50 transmission upside down (like they used to do on 935's) in order to gain better shaft geometry once the car gets lowered but it proved impossible as ring and pinion couldn't be reversed (and we didn't like the idea of 1 forward gear and 5 reverse gears). We gained slightly better geometry by raising front engine mount a bit. http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/019.jpg http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/081.jpg Once roof is off, it was a great oportunity to strengthen the cage by redoing all welds with a TIG welder: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/083.jpg Alternative engine mount points are needed so they are fabricated near rear bulkhead: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1102/086.jpg http://www.itsfun.nu//if2_2006/1102/088.jpg http://www.itsfun.nu//if2_2006/1102/087.jpg |
Tadaaaa....
The final solution to changing spark plugs on 3.6 engine w/o removing heaps of stuff: http://www.itsfun.nu//if2_2006/1102/080.jpg It's gonna be much easier to do field-service now. It also saves heaps of weight. Hmm....car looks more and more 935-ish, but with 30 years modern technology. |
I'm simply ........ speachless.
You guys are beyond nuts. This is like Monster Garage - Porsche Edition. Is anything going to support the rear of the engine? |

A little more was done today.
A beggining of home-made G50 shifter assy: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/12021.jpg More cage pipes: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/120216.jpg Front suspension pickup points are cut and are to be widened 7cm on each side of the car: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/120217.jpg Björn installed turbochargers so clearing can be checked: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/12028.jpg http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/120210.jpg |
Small generator is installed on engine:
http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/120213.jpg Intercoolers have to be parted a little to clear the fan: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/120212.jpg http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/120215.jpg Everyone is busy in garage: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/120219.jpg Tokan feels the power between his legs: http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/12022.jpg This is how it should look like. Pretty 935-ish, in my opinion. Weight should be in the ballpark too. http://www.itsfun.nu/if2_2006/1202/12024.jpg |
Goran, without the resistance of the large in fan alternator and having the fan over driven, is there any risk in over spinning the fan or the bearings it rides on (if it rides on any, I only imagine that it does)?

Whole "middle hole" is going to be blanked out so air can still move trough vanes just as it always did. |
I figured you guys were on top of it, I was just curious.
I like the writing on the rear flairs. :D |
Sweet!
Not that anyone would go off the track backwards with a 911 ;) but have you considered running some sort of bump/nerf bar to protect the motor? Quote:

Chris:
There is general agreement that we'll have some sort of pipe shield around the engine. There will be a rear engine mount as well but it won't take the brunt of weight and torque like it used to do but just make sure engine doesn't move longitudinally and provide hard points for CF cover. |
Goran,
Any pics of this car when it was in standard form? Just as a baseline. |
Holy MOLY! Great stuff. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing more...

Goran,
Is this a single owner car (maybe even your car) or does your shop own it? Is it just a toy or does it compete in any events? |

We are going to Nurburgring this spring and car is going to be driven in "Scuderia Hanseat" event to begin with. There are many sponsors involved, otherwise it would be very expensive to do this. Bodywork is being done at X-Custom shop. X-Custom are leading Swedish custom shop and were featured in TV and also did some stuff for MTV Nordic. I'll ask guys if I can post few pics on some other cars they did. There is a particular Targa tub that got converted to "James Dean" Speedster with stunningly beautiful full-metal bodywork and suicide doors. They are very skillfull. |
