CV Joint questions

I didn't mean to hijack the last guys post so I'll try my own.
Heard the tell tale clunking driving to work and checked the search engine, checked to make sure all the bolts are in and dont feel like driving it until I get it fixed.
Seems like all the bolts are in place. Hear a grinding noise on the drivers side inner joint (center of car) when I rotate the wheel in nuetral. I am 125 miles to the nearest Porsche wrench. Can a local transmission guy handle this? would it be wise to get 2 whole axles for $265 each and take it to the wrench or rent a flatbed and take it to the Porsche wrench in Denver? How much am I going to pay for the Denver Porsche wrench to do this job?
Will my local shop have the talent to do this? Thats 4 questions which should be enough. Wait! If I get brave and tackle the job myself are the joints already lubed and ready to go? Would it just be a bolts off bolts in?

HELP!!

Spend the money on a torque wrench and do it yourself. Our host sells the CV joint grease. You can do the whole job in a couple of hours...

It looks do-able, it looks like the bolts are normal hex pattern. Will I need the grease for the ends where it goes into the tranny as well as the place where the other end goes into the wheel? Or will I have to pack the joints themselves as well? Sorry for my ineptness but I dont turn wrenches just turn convicts into humans (well some of them).

Thanks

To rebuild your CV joints a few tricks:

1. Be sure to clean out the allen bolt heads with a pick and brake cleaner (wear safety googles)
2. A set of snap ring pliers are neccessary
3. Purchase the CV boot kit with CV boot, grease, and gaskets
4. A 30mm or 32mm socket is needed (depending on year)
5. Consider purchasing 3/4" drive stuff to remove the the big CV axle nut
6. Purchase new CV bolts
7. Purchase the special groove washers so the bolts do not backout
8. If 6 point allen bolt head is round, then a 12 point allen socket, long extention(s) a hammer, and then an impact ratchet works great to remove the stuck bolt.
9. To get the snap ring back on, using rags, hold the CV axle horizontally in a vice, line up the snap ring. Then get the big socket to go over the alxe end and onto the snap ring. Using a big hammer, hit the socket.
10. Buy the beer and have a couple of buds over to watch and or help.

- this one applies to Carreras, not sure about SC's; DNA to the earlier cars.

5a. A 5 foot section of 1-1/2 inch pipe makes a great cheater bar for busting the axle nuts loose. (Ask me how I know )
