Autocrossing with Deep 6 Fuch's
Is it a bad idea to autocross with Deep 6 Fuch's since they have no safety bead.
I need to know if I should start looking for a set of later flat 6's for the 67. Gonna try and do a bunch of AutoX's with it next year.

I asked my tire guy about this a ways back. I didn't want to autox on them, but I was planning some canyon runs and a lapping session at CA Speedway. I had heard they got it on out there for those lunch time laps and they did. But, that's another topic.
The tire guy said that today's tires will grip the barrel and not slip the bead with proper pressures, no matter what I did. I ended up selling the deep 6's for some good money after a short period of use, so I never really got to test the situation to be sure of it. The thing is, one doesn't want that test to fail. Deep 6's are worth enough and old enough that you might want to consider getting some alternative wheels for the events you go to. 15 x 6 alternative wheels can be pretty inexpensive if you look around. Like cookies and phone dials. 15 x 7's get a little more scarce and pricey. 16 x 6 Fuchs are cheap too, and you can get a stiffer sidewall tire on those. That is unless the rules prevent you from doing 16's. I just looked into some 15 x 6J Fuchs for a VW guy and they sell for minimum 500/4 needed refinishing. Most are in the 600-800 range. But deeps will go twice that and then some. Do you really want to race those? |

I ran my '69 911E at 10/10's on the track at Streets of Willow on Deep Six Fuchs and my street tires at 8 POC events. Never had any trouble. But when I got my Toyo Proxes RA-1 track tires, I put them on 15x7 Cookie Cutters.

I race my vintage car with deep sixes, no problems (yet anyway...)

I AutoX my car on deep sixes (with very low tire pressures) for quite a few years with no problems. If you get serious about Autox, you may want different rims just to get a bigger width.

Good info, thanks guys. I think I'll start searching for some flat 6's anyway. Always fun to buy crap even if you don't need it right?? Good to know that if I don't find any, or don't feel like changing out wheels some weekend, I can still run the deep 6's.
