upside down pricing?

I have noticed in shopping for a newer 911, that the 96-98 911s are still priced higher tha the 99-2001 911's. Should that worry me? There is obviously something I do not know. I am in the market for a newer 911 between 40,000-30,000.00 I want to get the best one I can for my ?s so what should I look at/for? EDUCATE ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats because the 96-98 911's are real air cooled beauties, the culmination of the Porsche handmade sports car.

The 99-2001 are water cooled plastic mass produced cars.

I do have a 96 triple black cab for sale

The Porsche 996 is a water cooled car. Not the car that made the 911 marque famous (oil/air cooled flat 6)--- 1999-2001 996s are fast fun cars but are not as coveted as earlier cars- in fact, 99-01's have had some failure issues and many dislikes regarding the styling- personally, i think they are a fun car, kinda soft and audi like though- might as well get an audi- so, if you are looking to spend between 30 to 40k you have the budget to get what many consider one of the finest 911's of all time- the 993 series- last of the air cooled and still has that "seat of your pants" ride and handling though some more modern touches as compated to 3.2's, sc's and other popular "recent" models- you should be able to get a nive 96 or 97 with lower mileage for 35 ish and a real nice one for 40- that would be a carrera 2- anyway, if you're gonna go 996 many suggest 2002 on and they are costly still- some have great success with the 99-01 996's and they are good cars, better than many, but a little soft and not attractive to many purists- so, it's really up to you and your taste- i know that many on this board would take 30-40k and purchase a tasty 993 coupe- that's what i'd do!

John, I was looking on rennlist classified ads and it seems the 993s are almost all above 40,000. Is rennlist a good place to look for these cars? Where do you think I would have my best luck finding these cars? Thanks for the help

I heard Jay Leno once say the last of old technology is usually better than the first of new technology.

I've been looking for a while. Here's what I've found:

95-96 C2/C4 (narrowbody) $25-35k
96-98 C2S/C4S (widebody) $38-50k

Tiptronics are a couple of $k cheaper than 6-speeds.

Cabs and coupes are priced about the same.

Mileage is a huge factor. <50k miles is a premium. >80k seems is a discount.

Private seller vs dealer is a huge factor. Dealer cars are often listed towards or even above the high end. Who knows if anyone pays that much.

Rennlist is a good place- lots of clean cars with low mileage- there is nothing wrong with a private sale or a local dealer (though will add a few $'s)--- just make sure that you get a ppi (pre purchase inspection) done by a competent specialist-- this is essential- yes, super low mile 993's are above 40 but there are lots of good ones out there for sale in the 30's that are lower mileage- take a look at ebay and you'll see some examples as well--- in the ppi make sure you get compression and full leakdown done- don't worry about things like pads, rotors, tires etc- you can work those items into sale price if they need replacing etc but don't let maintenacne bits and pieces put you off from a car that tests out well- service records are a really nice thing to have too- lastly, i might just put up a thread here on the board- most guys/girls on this board take good care of their cars and will (should) be pretty forthcoming as most of us are scared of bad porsche karma! i am! just keep hitting up this board with your ?'s cause all the answers are here with one member or another---

You can save your self a lot of potential trouble down the road by staying w/ a '95 993 or earlier 964. OBD1 is going to be in great demand as future state inspections become more onerus.

example is a guy that works for me, had to spend $500 last year to pass state inspection due to CEL issues, he was ecstatic that it only cost him another $200 this year.

Porsche Crest 996 may be more comfortable but..

There's lots of discussion on the issues with the 99 model year 996. First year of a new model with the issues one sometimes sees with first year models. I won't say anything negative about the 996 but I'd advise you to do some extra research.... then buy a 993.

Wide hips are in. My 96 C4S.

In addition to the greater desirability of the 993 over the 996 I believe the 996 sold for less then the 993 new as well.

seriously, nothing against 996's- lots of people have them and like them- they are fast and better than a lot of sports cars out there- but**** if you want to understand why the 911 has been so popular over the years and the choice of many who have had other world class sports cars and yet choose porsche 911 then don't buy a 996- the heritage is not there- doesn't mean 996's aren't a good car- they just don't have a lot of the traits that made the 911 the best sports car of all time- you can't go wrong with either really but you can go better with a 993! (or 964, or 3.2, or SC or . . . I make myself sick with love for these air cooled beauties!
